Things to improve your storyline

Let's face it... every RPG has some kind of betrayal or twist. But it's been done so many times that what's expected is what's not expected. Ya know, expect the unexpected. So how do you improve a storyline? I'll help ya.

OK, let's take an example storyline. An orphaned boy lives in the village square, begging for food until one day he gets a super sharp sword and sets off on an adventure and falls in love with a princess and has to defeat the evil king. Pretty basic, huh?

What's wrong with this, you ask? There's no room for dungeons. Everything happens so fast that this game could be contained in an hour. And how many RPGs are an hour long? Let's make some changes:

An orphaned boy lives in the village square, begging for food until one day he gets a super sharp sword and sets off on an adventure and falls in love with a princess, but in order to reach the castle he must find the six golden gems scattered throughout the land, and then has to defeat the evil king.

Now we're getting somewhere. But look, there's only one hero. Let's add an assassin that has would kill anyone in sight if there was no law, but also's a well trained mercenary who loves soap operas and thus, wishes to help you find your true love.

OK, so we've got two people. Let's add a third. A happy young girl named Leah from the nearby village of Kichi, she will gladly help the hero, but is also a little too friendly in a 2nd grade kind of way.

Now we've got our party. The expected thing is that the assassin will turn out to be a fraud working for the king and in a last stand you kill him. Let's change it up. After you rescue the princess, the assassin is drooling over the thought of turning the story into a video game, and Leah gets jealous of your true love. Then Leah turns out to be the real final boss, a pretty little girl with vicous teeth. After defeating her... Well... credits role, and the assassin spouts off some memorable line like "true love overcomes all obstacles, no matter how sharp the teeth.." or something like that.

Well, thanks for reading this, and I hope this inspired you to take a lame story and turn it on its heels. And feel free to use this story in your game, I'd love to see how it turns out.
