Stop it already!
Seriously guys, stop using the tutorial as a means to write one line sections on "Little poopy balls." I know the tutorial section is extremely lax, but it's an insult to everyone who seriously submits tutorials, and it makes you look like an idiot.
Because I firmly believe tutorials should NOT be used this way, the rest of this post will be on making nonlinear games.
To make a decent nonlinear game, you should have plenty of leftover switches and variables.
Although you can have a game where people just wander around aimlessly, it won't be considered nonlinear, but rather boring. So in an RPG, words speak louder than actions. Make most of the nonlinear parts based on choices that you make instead.
Example, you have a choice whether to stay with your sister, or go with the freedom fighters. Going with the fighters will open up a lot of the map, staying with your sister might open up some romance events in your home town (your sister knows a girl you're interested in).
After each choice, either turn on a switch, or set a variable to a certain number (this one is more efficient, using only one thing, but you'll need to write down the choice somewhere because Sister/ArmyChoice is 1 doesn't mean anything). Then in the side boxes check the option there, allowing the building to be entered if you chose that choice, or not if you didn't. Simple as that.
