Plotline Help- My Method

Please note this was originally a response to a post in the forum, so terms like "In the first post" etc are because of that.

If you find you have trouble thinking of a storyline for your game, these are the steps I go through....

Please note I posted this as a reply to a topic first.

1) Decide the genre

Obviously it will probably be an RPG, but is it going to be more of the "four-friends-go-on-an-adventure-and-beat-evil" game like the first couple of Final Fantasy games, or be a game full lots of twists and turns, like the Dark Eternal games. Do you want to characters to be sterotypical, as rojse below said, or do you want to be more unique? You decide. Play your favorite RPG games to get more ideas. For example, I had no ideas for a game, but after playing Shadow Hearts for a week or so, I started a project.

2) Decide the depth of the game

Do you want the game to be a short 30 mins to an hour game, or a full game that may take weeks to complete, with side-quests etc and lots of character development. For example, the first FF games had little in the ways of character development to me, in the originals at least, which the later Final Fantasy's like FFXII had a more depth story line. Of course, you don't need to make a game in the same league as Final Fantasy, but you see my point.

3) Is the story "one way"?

For example, is there a straight storyline, with not different endings, like for example Final Fantasy X, or are there different possible endings, like in FFX-2, or every Shadow Hearts game. This will affect the whole story, as the player responding differently will make the CPU's act differently, etc.

4) Decide your characters and there past

As you said in the first post, you were unsure of a background story for one of the characters. Maybe they could be the sole survivor of a clan of proud warriors, or could they simply be someone looking for something to live for, and therefore attach themselves to the group. Again, perhaps take elements from your favorite games, and the games others make, to give you ideas.

And finally: 5) Choose where you ultimatly want the story to go

Will it all be good for the party members? Will there be any deaths of close allies to the group? Will an ally betray them, and be the final boss?
