Lantern Effect
Edit: I am having major troubles with imageshack, so to view the images that are SUPPOSED to be below, paste the link in the address bar.
Let me start by saying, this tutorial is simple, most people probably already know how to do this, but, I'm submitting it anyway.
1st Step Getting and Uploading the Lantern Picture
The first step is to create a picture to darken everything you don't want to see, like this one

I made the picture above for a game I'm working on, I don't mind if you use it. I also don't mind if you don't give me credit, it took five minutes tops to make, and I would never figure out anyway.
The White on this picture is the transparent, and the Grey is semi-transparent, as seen below.

Once the picture is uploaded (whatever the "official" term for that is) you have to place it in a dungeon.
Step 2 Place the Lantern Picture Thing in a Dungeon
First part of this, is making a dungeon.
For this tutorial, I am assuming you already have or are going to right now. By the way, add extra space on the ends of the dungeon, or the picture doesn't work right. 10 empty squares on all sides should do it.
Now make a new Common Event, name it something like, "Lantern Effect" or "Jacklo's Ultimate Awesome Lantern Effect of Doom!" just don't go overboard or anything.
Now have this Common Event run Parallel Process activating on whatever switch you choose.
In this Common Event add the event "Show Picture", its under Pictures and Weather, in tab 2. Set the Image Number to under any you may be using of dialogue, or mini-map or whatever. For the graphic, use the lantern graphic thing. Leave everything else in that alone.
The Common event should look something like this:
