For The New Guy
Many people would like the effect of having the text pause part-way into the conversation, so it's not like someone's just barfing out all these words at one time. This is kinda easy to do, actually. Where you want the text to pause, insert a "\." (No quotes, obviously) to pause for a quarter of a second, and a "\|" to pause for a whole second. I tend to use the quater-pause for commas and the one-second pause for periods. Hmm, sounds wrong if you look at it a certain way.
It will display like this in the editor: "But don't you see?!\| There are several monsters roaming around!\| Who knows what they're carrying\. too!\|"
In the game, it will pause at the points where the symbols are.
Now, to make your own facesets, you first want a 384X192 sized sheet open in Paint, Macromedia Fireworks, whatever. Go ahead and make whoever (like the head of a stick figure-it's all I can do :P) and save it. Go into VX and navigate to the resource manager. Click on faces and click "Import" on the upper right-hand side of the window. Browse the maze of files to where you saved your stick head or whatever, and click OK. Voila, it's ready for use when you get text ready!
This is the most basic stuff you can get, but it's enough to get a good game started. More stuff soon, like text colors, variable usage, switch usage, and yes, custom character imports. I REALLY hope that this has helped!
