Custom Lighting / Sound

Custom Lighting / Sound

I know what you're thinking: This is pretty simple. Right?

Well, you're right. Adding lighting and sound is simple, but the limits of this basic idea are endless. If you want your game to be unique, this is how. So let's get started!

Step 1: Make a map.
For the sake of this tutorial, you may want to make the map indoors and add a fireplace so that we can effectively add a "fire" BGS to it later.

Step 2: Decide on how you would like the map to look.
So, for example, you may want to make the map dull and dark or, in my case, add a tinge of red to it. The possibilities are endless.

Step 3: Decide on if there are going to be any sounds.
If you followed my advice from step 1, then it will be a good idea to have a "fire" sound.

Step 4: Add the lighting.
To do this you need a single event. I like to put my lighting / sound event in the top left corner so that it's out of the way.

In this event, the priority should be set to "BELOW CHARACTER" and the trigger should be set to "AUTORUN".

Then, add a "TINT SCREEN" command to your event. In this command menu you are given six options:

Red: Controls how much red will be seen. The higher the number, the more there is.
Green: Controls how much green will be seen.
Blue: Controls how much blue will be seen.
Gray: Controls how much color will be seen. The higher the number, the less color there is and the more dull the screen becomes.
Time: Controls how long the screen will take to be tinted in the way you specify.
Wait for completion: By checking this box, the command will have to be completed before anything else can be done in the event or, if the event is not set to parallel process, anywhere else.

By using these 6 options, you can change the time of day, create an amazing flashback event, darken the rooms of a dungeon or even create emotion.

So, for example, you can set the time to night by setting the colors to Red: -100, Green: -100, Blue: -80, Gray: 200.
Also, you can create a sense of anger by setting the colors to Red: 0, Green: -50, Blue: -100, Gray: 0.
So, play around to get the effect you like and, once again, the possibilities are endless.

Step 5: Adding the sound.
This is much easier than the lighting. For music, go to the lighting / sound event which, should already have the light effect, and add a "PLAY BGM" command. Then, choose the BGM, select set the volume and pitch (pitch controls how high "pitched" the sound is) and that's it.

This can also be applied to BGS's, such as a fire effect. So, because you would have already set up a fireplace before, you can add a "fire" BGS as well. To do this, just add a "PLAY BGS" command, choose "fire", set the volume and pitch and now you have a fire sound.

Also...

There are a few more things you should know about this technique before putting it into practice. It should be noted that this is the more technical part of this tutorial.

First of all, if you're going to use custom sounds, AVOID using auto-change BGM and BGS. This is because they will begin to interfere with you custom sounds. In fact, I never use auto-change sounds because, in that way, everything is a lot more flexible.

Secondly, if you want to change the sound when exiting a map, it would be ideal for you to place another custom lighting and sound event in the next map. Also, if there is a BGS on your current map that you don't want on the next map(s), then add a "FADEOUT BGS" command in the custom lighting / sound event in the next map(s).

Thirdly, I like to set the lighting so that, when entering a room, the light fades in smoothly. To do this, set the "Time" of the "TINT SCREEN" command to 10 and uncheck the "Wait for completion" box.

Finally, the rest is up to you. There are millions of possibilities using this simple idea so don't be afraid to have an imagination.
