7 things that make a good cutscene
Hey everyone... I've worked on many games including
VaCANT EMOTiON (check it out!) and I've got a list of things that make or break a good cutscene.
1: A good map
You really need a good mapper (possibly yourself)
if you want to do any good. The map is the setting, it helps the player imagine where everything is taking place.
2: Movement
No one wants to watch a cutscene that's five minutes long with two people rambling back and forth- add some movement, maybe a chase scene or a change in maps.
3: Faceset/character's name
It's important for the player to know who's saying what or they could miss a major plot point.
4: Emotion
The characters in your game should be like people or animals, which, obviously have feelings. The story shouldn't be "Oh boo hoo he is burning the village". It should be... "NO!!! Mother? Father? Anyone? Did they leave anyone? NOOO!!!!"
5: Get to the point
Earlier I said no one wants to watch a five minute cutscene with no movement, but I take that back. No one wants to watch a five minute cutscene at all!!! Get your message across, but don't waste the player's time.
6: Tell a story
A big cutscene should be for a major event, so make sure you tell a story. If there's a big twist... well, you decide how you want everything to play out, but make sure it isn't "Oh I'm going to the market be back in a half hour bye k seeya..." NO. TELL A STORY.
7: Have fun with it
Don't make a game because you have too... you're doing this for fun, remember? Put in things you think the player will enjoy. And yes, there can be humor in RPGs! So do it! People enjoy that kind of thing!
