The program was initially only released for Japan. Like the other RPG Maker series, the program was translated into English by people such as Postality Knights and RPG Advocate (their versions being the most widely used) and distributed around the English-speaking communities. Enterbrain, therefore, decided to release the official English version of RPG Maker XP with the condition that the user must purchase the license to use beyond the free 30-day trial period. Since then illegal distribution of the
program has substantially decreased, with many sites supporting only the legal versions.
