Thief VX Review
An unfulfilling story: The review of Thief VX
Review by Dr. Faust
To be honest, I went into this thinking that i'd find hope in this game after reviewing it once before(Eien_Tsubasa's, A review of Thief and Blizzard Planet), sadly the game seems worse off than ever... and I actually got farther than before! So let's once again go over 'Thief VX'.
The Story:
Once upon a midnight dreary
A thing broke in, a thief most eerie
with a spring in his step, he played 'swipe as you go'
and turned a dear old dad into old 'john doe'
Had a bit of fun there :)
But, if you haven't already played this, a thief breaks into the hero's house, steals their stuff and kills their parents. The rest of the story revolves around the children of the dead parents chasing after this thief after seeing him in a wanted poster. This WOULD be interesting depending on how you decide to approach the story line, the problem is... there IS no approach. For the rest of the game you follow a bee line path through the very small map, going through dungeons until you hear that the thief was spotted somewhere.
There's absolutely no character development, nothing that makes you want to really care about the characters or their journey. How about this for interesting character development, after removing the whole 'wanted poster' plot device, you have:
George:
A young man currently obsessed with finding the thief and claiming revenge for the death of their parents and their brother Hughey. George's searching pays off as he finally finds a lead on the elusive murderer who was last seen in (x)location
Ulrika:
George's sister who, in the beginning, tries to convince him to give up tracking down the thief before his obsession drives him to madness. Her mind is changed, however, when she finds out that Hughey is still alive and, quite possibly, with the thief.
What's the difference? If you work off of something along the lines of that, you gain a lot of opportunities for character development. You become more interested in what these characters will do once they've reached their goals(Although in this case, their goal is the same).
Gameplay:
Different doesn't always mean better, especially when the changes are only cosmetic. Some skill slots here, a dash of icon sets there, those things won't matter if nothing changes internally. The monsters are STILL unbalanced, there's not a single item/ weapon shop in sight after the second town, it's like the project was rushed out just to gain what little net cred he could off of just the name alone, and it doesn't take a review to tell anyone that that's a bad idea.
Top 10 'Super Cool' things in this game:
10: In the beginning, Ulrika hears an explosion and... Smiles!?
9: Ulrika: "I really just wanna stab him right now" lol wut?
8: Warrior college, further blurring our concept of where and when this game takes place.
7: There's a computer in George's room, but noting in the world that shows its being powered by anything.
6: George levels faster than Ulrika, thus Ulrika has ADHD.
5: Random 3 second dungeons
4: Seifer/Zell sketch cameo Seifer: "lol chicken wuss" Zell: "Grr, take that back!"
3: Thief: "It seems you've defeated my weaker form. Bearing in mind I was only using ONE percent of my energy!" Sound familiar? Dragonball Z villain Frieza says the exact same lines.
2: Ulrika: "Let's go have a train at the training mine at the back right of the town" The whole line is hilarious and it seems Ulrika can't say 'northwest'.
1: Priest: "The church is a great place to unwind."- Yeah, put my feet up, light a cigar and enjoy a Jagermeister with the father, the son and the holy ghost.
Amen
Well, this game gets a 2 of 10 for all the reasons stated. If making something look good was al it took to make an impressive rpg, this would've gotten a higher score. But, nothing is ever that simple, a well done rpg requires time and much, much effort, and there's just no shortcut to effort.
