A Guards Tale
Review by breadlord
A Gaurds Tale is a game filled with small but effective nuggets of gaming gold, and sadly a few small nuances. Overall making for an enjoyable game, if you don't mind ignoring a few small things.
One of these golden nuggets is the fact that EVERYTHING reacts when you try to interact with it (well, 99.99% of everything). These reactions are wonderfully worded descriptions of the item in question, the weather, ect.
An extension of this encridible ability to interact is the ability to bash trees, leading to gaining whatver might be up there, be it an apple, honeycombe, or even an aggressive bee hive. Though embedded in this bashing system is a small nuancne, this beeing that getting the posionous hive is allot more common than it should be if you want to go around bashing trees. But in the begging this doesn't really matter, seeing as the hives never kill you, no matter what your hp.
Another extension of the ability to interact with things is the relationship system, though you cant get the full grasp of this in the demo, you can get a very good picture of it. And that picture is good. This system basicaly involves picking replies to what the female npc is saying. This can make the love meter go up or down and change there status, wich ranges from 'single' to 'likes you as a friend'. A more visual perk of the relationship system is that all of the people you can start a relationship with have extra large, nice looking, faces.
And with that note I move on to the graphical aspects of the game, while still using the default vx rtp A Guards Tale actually manges to make it look quite good, for the mapping is excellent, but the theme of using rtp graphics is consistent throughout, with soley rtp sprites and faces. And to be honest, it still looks good. Except for the faces, now I have nothing against rtp faces, they actually look rather good, it's just that a lot of the time it doesn't use faces atall. Now to move away from the conventional graphics, an ornate banner is displayed at the top whenever you enter the main village map, and the Guards Tale logo is forever displayed in the top left corner, occasionaly accompanied by the name of your current assingment in the top right.
The assigments are a great differation from the genaric rpg quest of go here, kill that, for they require you to do interesting minigames. Though you cannot view your objectives from the menu, bad if you forget what you were ment to be doing.
A Gaurds Tale also boasts a fishing feature, wich involves you finding a spot, selecting bait, and seeing what you catch, and when you catch something, it even shows you a nice little thing of lookking down through the ocean to see a nice picture of the fish you just caught. Nothing wrong here.
Overall, this game is a good one to play, simply because it combines good gameplay, nuggets of amazing graphics, and a genral air of fun, seamlessly.
