Review of a Madman
Review by TwilightApostle
Diary of a Madman continues the long-standing tradition of games featuring psychopathic anti-heroes, but this game comes with a delightful twist thrown in. Read on to find out what it is.
DoaM is about a necromancer who's sent to a king in dire need of help. At first it seems as though the necromancer is evil, but it's later revealed that he is merely acting under orders of an evil leader. The player follows the story through playing the game and reading journal entries which reveal the inner workings of the necromancer's mind.
The gameplay is solid, though some of the systems are a bit insubstantial. The synthesis shop is an interesting idea, though it does not accomplish anything that could not have been done through more conventional means. It makes the system feel a bit redundant. However, it does provide the player with the goal of collecting gemstones and other items.
The battles are quite interesting. Even a minor enemy is capable of inflicting massive damage to the party due to status attacks. The player actually needs to think strategically to deal with monsters. Good job here.
The presentation of the game is essentially one entire package of moodiness. From the music to the chipsets the game exudes a dark, grave feel. It's all brought together quite well. There are a lot of unique chipsets and less popular music, so the game achieves a very original feel.
Diary of a Madman provides a unique game experience and a steep difficulty curve With a little more innovation in its systems it could set the standard for games of its type.
