Donkey Kong 2k Review
Donkey Kong RM2K - A far from professional experiment that is challenging and surprisingly fun.
Review by Tenchu-San
Those of you who were alive and into gaming in the 80's are well aware of the arcade classic: Donkey Kong. Well, the developer behind this title has done an amazing job with the tools available to not only recreate the gameplay of Donkey Kong, but offer us new challenges.
The Graphics in this title are rips of various Mario games throughout history. The graphics are put together in well thought out and challenging levels that are pleasing to the eye. There's not much to say here about the graphics, as they're not really mind-blowing or original, they're just used well. The menus in this title are slightly confusing to navigate at first, mind you. In the main menu your cursor (Mario) doesn't show up until after you start to move the arrow keys and the level select menu doesn't really have any cursor at all to speak of; just the words "LEVEL #" showing you which level you have selected.
The Sound in this game comprises of MIDI covers of Super Mario songs and some familiar sounds to show when you lose or win. There's no sound when Mario jumps, which is strange. As mediocre as the sounds are, the music makes up for it and the most important part of the game grabs your attention.
The gameplay. The gameplay here is classic Donkey Kong, but with new level designs that challenge those who are new to the game or have played the original a million times before. Warning to those interested: this game is hard. Some of the platforms are difficult to maneuver and some of the barrels come at you lightning fast. The game is far from impossible however, as long as you keep trying you'll eventually beat the level and unlock the next. There are only 10 levels available, but each one becomes progressively harder than the next (as to be expected.)
There is absolutely no story beyond saving the princess in this title, which is perfectly fine. This title is a platformer, and is a remake of an arcade classic that isn't meant to challenge our imagination, merely our reflexes and patience.
If you enjoyed the classic Donkey Kong in the arcades, I'd recommend this title if you're willing to sacrifice presentation for challenging levels. It's a good attempt to make a tribute to a classic game, and it gets my approval for those of you bored at work with time to kill.
