Maranda Review
Miranda, the 'rm2kfic'
Review by SeeYouAlways
This is not really a game, but more like a 'movie'. Did I ruin the best part of this game too fast? Yes, you heard right. All you do is sit and watch. Maranda is what you call a 'rm2kfic'. The story is based from the creator's Final Fantasy VI fanfic, and a good one at that. Even if you are the kind of person who does not like sitting still on your chair doing absolutely nothing but blink, Maranda will surprise you. Before starting, look at the clock. Once you are done, look at the clock again. Congratulations, time has just flown.
Another important remark: Does this represent the world of Final Fantasy VI in a perfect way? The graphics and the sounds almost perfectly resemble the actual Final Fantasy VI environment. Sure, it is not hard to find premade resources for this, but copying maps directly from the actual game can take some work. I was also impressed at the little details such as the poses characters make and the different kinds of movement they make. The graphics and sounds were manipulated well overall.
The story was the factor that made Maranda worth watching until the end. The basic storyline of the original Final Fantasy VI was well adapted into the game. The creator knows his stuff, alright. The original characters (such as Terra) were represented very well. Celes' personality was indeed the most interesting to watch, as we don't really get to see her evil side of herself much in the original game. Edgar is still his usual self. However, the characters this story focus on are Karen Peterson and William Shire. They were portrayed so well in the game that I even felt annoyed by Karen's stubborn personality.
Let's look at the technical sides of Maranda. Dialogues were is basically flawless, or infact, the entire game is. Everything ran smoothly and done well throughout to the credits, so there shouldn't really be a problem in running this game. Maybe a feature such as saving the progress of the movie would have been nice as you need to give this game around a hour or so.
Finally, I just want to wrap up this review with a comment something like 'Maranda is really well made and you simply must play (or watch) this!'. After you finish, you also might want to check out the fanfic where this game is based from. It's quite a nice read.
