Curse of Silence Review
A deafening silence
Review by TwilightApostle
There are a few examples of the true potential of the RPG Maker engine, and The Curse of Silence is definitely one of them. Read on to find out why.
The Curse of Silence is currently only available as a demo, but the potential for growth is apparent in every facet of the game. The player begins as a solitary hero, cursed to wander the world in silence until he can find a way to cure it. The story is somewhat bare minimum, with very little deviation from the main plot. This can be forgiven, since it's a demo, but this would be a great area to beef up in later releases.
However, unlike the somewhat anemic storyline the gameplay is undeniably top-notch. The Curse of Silence is an action RPG: instead of entering the traditional side-view battle screen at random encounters, the player must fight the enemies as they appear on-screen. This is a daunting feat, and it is executed wonderfully. Unfortunately, I would feel remiss if I didn't mention that the hit accuracy is not exactly 100%; the player may become frustrated at the first mid-boss, as he requires MP to kill, but somehow manages to speed up out of the way of your attacks as soon as you use them. Hopefully this will be remedied in future releases.
Speaking of unique systems, The Curse of Silence also boasts a custom menu that seems to actually enhance the game. Again, hopefully this part of the game will be beefed up later on.
The chipsets are used fairly well. The battle areas are sparse object-wise, so the player can focus on fighting and levelling up, which is quite essential to playing through the game. This is actually the first time I've seen background used as a tool, and it works quite well. The sound is good, but not very memorable. Nothing really sticks out about it -- it does its job, but it's not terribly impressive, which is ashame given the excellence of the other areas.
The Curse of Silence is a very well-made game which obviously took a lot of skill and effort. If you're just getting into RPG making, definitely download this to see just how much you can do with the program. If you've been at it for awhile, download it to get a fresh look at game making. Whatever you do, don't miss it.
