The Happy Fun Game - True to it's title.

Review by Tenchu-San

Cliches, we all fear them to some degree. Yet there are some brave souls who wish to embrace them willingly and parade them around for all to see.

The Happy Fun Game, does just that. Yet don't fear my friends, it's all for the sake of comedy and supah-cool action combat.

The graphics in this title are all edits and RM2K/3 RTP. Yet, like the cliches that this game revels in the RTP and rips are well used and fit together in a way that doesn't detract from the gameplay and actually looks good. The combat animations are well done and flashy, the cut scenes that give some nice breaks between exploration and fighting are also well done and look good.

As for sound, the music are also taken from other sources but used well. The sound effects are well used and help keep you immersed in the fun gameplay, which is important. The sound isn't jaw-dropping, but it does what it's meant to do; and it does it well.

darkyoshi must have looked at a grand list of RPG cliches and decided to make fun of every single one, because that's exactly what it seems he has done with his story. The dialogue is well done and authentically funny, I actually ended up laughing out loud. Don't come looking here for a serious well to do RPG storyline that explores the unknown, as the warning before you even start states: this game requires a sense of humor (and a lack of gullibility as certain suggestions to unlock intense features in the beginning are downright hilarious).

Now we get to the true core of this shiny apple, the gameplay. THFG features an ABS that is extremely well done and fun to play. However a warning must be stated for laptop users that this game REQUIRES a numpad to progress farther than the first 30 seconds of Chapter 1. Once you have all the required equipment, the game moves along at a pleasant pace with bonuses, places to explore and combat, oh the combat. The keyboard and numpad has certain commands assigned to them (and can be reassigned from the menu). These commands are the bread and butter of your combat. The numbers on the numpad offer some flashy special moves, while the symbol keys let you use more basic attacks and blocks. If it sounds confusing, don't worry. You can choose between an EZ Mode, Normal and INSANE difficulty rating from the get go. The menu is custom and has so many options available in it that I guarantee your head will spin when you first look at it.

The Happy Fun Game is a shining example of humor and great gameplay. The level of customization is extremely well done for an RM game and the story offers a chuckle, guffaw or even a roaring laughter at times. If RM Games could be uploaded to the DS then I'd likely carry this one around in my pocket to pass the time in my travels, and so should you.
