Wow...I-I'm impressed!: A Review of Legend of the Crystal Cave

Review by eien_tsubasa

Haha. I just got a lovely mature message today that I would like to share with you all. It reads:

"Hey nerd, can't you stop?! Can not you see that my fans are enjoying it?! So please, disappear! Why don't you just create your own game? Are you afraid that it may just be ignored by people? Hah! Weakling! Stop making stupid and dumb reviews!"

Alright, the reason I put this up is to clearify a few things, and I can some this up with "I DON'T HATE EVERYONE'S GAMES." There are just some that I do like and some that I don't, its simple opinion. Today however, I would like to review a game that I not only like, but LOVE. Yes, for the first time ever, I have found my soulmate, and it is "Legend of the Crystal Cave".

The story begins with narrative (and very subtle narrative at that). It talks about the surrounding legend of the Crystal Cave, and how its location is unknown, and two kingdoms who, despite the growing tensions between them have been allies for many years. But this is so to change (DUH DUH DUUUUH).

The story then changes perspective to two knights named Geo and (I'm sorry the female knight's name just escaped me so I'll just call her) Ulrika. They are called by the king to find and recover a weapon hidden in the forest. The enemy kingdom plans to use said weapon to launch a surprise attack on yours, so the king makes this mission top priority. As your are trying to retreave the weapon, you encounter vicious monsters and pleading towns folk you give you quests that, when completed, increases your character's "fame".

Now to describe the game...impressive. The story is very subtle and not overblown. The dialog in LotCC was beautifully written as well: The king spoke as if he was monarchy, the knights had a noble air about them when they spoke, and the general who tells you the ins and outs of the game had a commanding prescence. Nothing phony, over-the-top, or overblown. They were all likeable to me.

The maps are impressive as well as the tilesets used to create the scenery made sense and brought color into the game. The towns were bustling with people, the forests had a mixture of cut down trees, regular trees, the whole nine yards. The castle was personally my favorite map. I actually caught myself staring at the screen for maybe five minutes before i began playing (LOL).

I especially loved the battle system. It was a simple throwback to the classic RPGs of old, and one of the very few games to have the gall NOT the use the sideview battle system. Each character had a limit gauge, but the limit gauge went up slowly, which avoids Limit Break overspam. Enemy HP was located on the left side of the screen so that the battle screen wasn't filled with clutter. I've always been a sucker foe FPRPG's so this battle system won me over.

I would say that the only problem I encountered was the poison iconset, which looked like a ball and chain. This little problem however didn't totally kill the overall gameplay, and its something that the creator could fix anytime he wanted,so it wasn't worth the nitpick.

Okay now for the rating:

-Subtle and entertaining story
-well written dialog
-simple but playable battle system
-balanced limit gauge
-VERY WONDERFUL MAPPING

A perfect 10!

What can I say. This game completely won me over. Its simple, with a touch of good story and a splash of well done backdrops. I was going to give this a 9.5 but after everything I listed above, I just couldn't resist.

If only other creators went for simplicity rather than brand spanking new, I'm sure other games would get 10's too, but, eh, what can you do...
