Kailis: The Crystal Souls Review
You would never think this game was developed in a click-and-drop environment.
Review by Sizux
As time passes, new games are being created with the simple RPG Maker that are truly unbelievable. It is amazing what advance features those who use the program can dish out. Custom menus and battle systems are a few to name, and this game has those and plus some.
Kailis: The Crystal Souls throws many plot details at the player right from the start. The protagonist, Luna Moonbane, is one of the last Dragoons alive and is destined to collect the eight Soul Shards that were shattered apart from the Destiny Soul Crystal by King Askar. Confused? Do not worry--I was, too. But the plot slowly becomes more apparent as the game progresses. In order for Luna to become an Arch-Dragoon, she must be accompanied by Reyvk (also known as Wyvra), a creature that makes scary noises. King Askar is willing to sacrifice everything--even Kailis and the residents--to summon the fabled "Forgotten God". Will his plan succeed, or will Luna intervene before his plan is executed?
The battle system is quite unique. Not only is it real-time fighting (similar to Secret of Mana), but it also has a feature that allows the player to bind skills to the 1-9, 0 and A keys. The only difficulty with this feature is the controls. Having the D button as defend and the S button to perform a regular attack, it is a strain on the hand to use the skills strategically. The enemies are also imbalanced, so defending is almost never necessary. Through its flaws, the combat system is still an advance and fun feature.
The music in the game is second to game play in creativity. The BGM compliments the tone of the scene and is uplifting. The sound effects are not annoying and redundant. The continuous SE (like rain and weather) is also appealing to the ears. The time spent in the music portion of the game really sticks out.
If there's one feature I would like to push into the mud, it would be the text. The white font is often hard to read, especially in bright scenarios. The speed messages are displayed is also a bore. I can read faster than five words per 10 seconds, please move faster Mr. text. Also, the text box reforms to the size of the words inside of it. This feature is cool, but can sometimes be annoying as the size reform takes a few seconds to display the last word of a sentence. It's like reading "We have to go find the" in a large box, waiting three seconds to reform to a smaller box, then finishing with "treasure".
Though there are flaws (just like EVERY game EVER made), the awesome game play, music and scripting overshadows it. I was not able to finish the demo, but from my experience playing it, the game is well worth the time. Since it's still a demo, changes will be made. I just hope they change the passable tile when Luna first meets Reyvk. :)
