Drake: Tale of a Mercenary Review
Dragon Warrior 1 nostalgia
Review by vvalkingman
The premise of the game is just as the author described: Get strong enough to kill the dragon, then kill the dragon. It reminds me alot of the first dragon warrior, but better in my opinion. Before I get struck down by the rpg gods, I'd like to point out that in "Drake" the player is given a hook...a reason to actually kill the dragon. You're getting paid for it. I feel that the character design on Drake was alright but could have been done alittle better. I'm mainly talking about in conversation to the townspeople. As far as the original artwork on the main character's faceset, it needed alittle touching up as it imported with the white line around it which is a big pet peeve of mine. The dungeons were well mapped out, except for forest maze where you could just walk through the trees. Don't know if that was done on purpose but it kind of made it less of a maze. On a good note, the scaling on the battles was done very well. The bosses were just difficult enough to be interesting and not too hard to be impossible though the rogue in the mountains was pretty rough after a few Yells... I'd also like to praise the designer on treasure placements. I would've liked to have seen a few free treasures in town, like a free potion or something from one of the bookcases. All in all though, it kept me playing. Never really got boring. Fights were interesting. Only reason I score it at a 6.5 though is because there is no real story line to pull you through the dungeons or to tell you which order you should do the dungeons in. Good game, well done, hope to check out your other works.
