Demonicon X Review
Demonicon X - mediocrity at its best
Review by killergermel
Demonicon X is, as stated in the description, a tactical RPG, and because most rpg's are not tactical, this game stood out among the others and intrigued me quite a bit.
The game title seemed promising, but as I entered the game, I was immediately tossed into the name choosing screen and then to choose my looks, which I never really found important. The background music during all of that and during the world map was about 5 second annoying music looping constantly, which drove me senseless.
When I first entered the game, I was given no back story or plot, nothing at all, not one bit of information, I was thrown to the water, and I was sinking like a heavy stone.
So no back story, ok then what about instructions about what to do next in the game, or where I should go... None were exist, so I just wandered to the inn, the shop and to the woods, until I finally got to a forest in which I did the first main quest.
The menu was actually somewhat esthetic, but that’s all I can say really about it, there was nothing else special about it.
The fishing in the game was a mess – the tournament is a nice incentive to fish, but the fishing itself yield almost no reward. What is the purpose if fishing if I don't get any actual fish?! But I have to say that I did like the option to level up and by that gain items which strengthen you, like the item which increase the max HP of a party member by 5.
In all of the villages, the armor and weapon shops are the same, which baffles me, because why would you need 3 or 4 shops that sell the same weapons. You don't need more than one shop for it. And another thing is that some of the items you can buy there are just as strong as your starting items. What's the sense in that?
Also, I have to concern many of the glitches in this game, most of which don't ruin the gameplay, but they do show an amateurish style to game:
•The game crashes sometimes, like in quest 28.
•I am sometimes given the message that I pulled the fishing rod too early while fishing, when I clearly did not press the action button.
•After a main quest fight there's a dialogue, but after exiting the main quest area, this dialog's first line is said again.
•The main protagonist's sprite seems to disappear during main quest 3 and in later battles. The character itself exists but the sprite is invisible.
•After I get the game over screen, the game crashes.
•Healing skills which enemies use don’t heal them.
•Checking the "status" of the party member while in combat freezes the game until you press escape.
There are more glitches, but these are enough for now.
The game is, as said in the description, really is a tactical one. The battle system is unique and unlike any other system I have seen in other games, and is quite good and fluent actually, and is the strongest point of the game.
The mapping of the indoors is decent, and gives the right atmosphere to the right rooms, unlike the mapping outdoors, which is horrendous and not appealing to the eye at all.
The demon Gar is much stronger than Gage, but the game is pretty easy so it doesn't really matter. I got bored pretty quickly because there was no challenge, but every once in a while there was a quest (side quest) that was much harder than the other quests, even harder than the side quest or main quest that were after the hard side quest. This game requires a lot of twitching and balancing. Also, another thing that I noticed was that only Gage was attacked, even if Gar was closer, and needed less turns to get to.
Also, what are those lucky coins I was needed to get back, and why? And why isn't there an option to escape the battle if I feel my ass being handed to me?
After the third main quest and side quests, I tried to go to the fourth main quest, but I got a message that I can't go there yet. I had to go to school before, but how could I possibly know that. There was no instruction to go there… And the fifth main quest is where I got stuck, because the game couldn't find an "aggravated dragon" battler and quit on me… It was obvious that no one tested this game.
As far as the story goes, I can't say much because it almost non exist, and all the story I got was from what was written in the description, but it seems that it has a good potential if one does not develop it into a cliché or a predictable storyline.
Final score: 5.5.
