Advent VX... too much size, for such poor quality.

Review by antifarea

Have you ever gone to your local videogame store... picked up an RPG game, took it home, and after hours of playing it did you get the feeling of saying "I want my money back!"? Well, although you won't be spending cash on RM games, perhaps I haven't thought of what else I could say about Advent... there will be a little bit of spoilers in this review, but trust me, it's for your own good... as well I made this review based on the old download link, considering the latest link posted by it's creator isn't complete and with technical errors that won't let you go beyond 95% of it's installation... so with that said, read below!

To start, I felt a little bit strange when reading the story and witnessing the way events were... at first I seriously thought I skipped things in the story, and I was wondering how come there were things happening that I wasn't following... while I went back to certain scenes to see if I misread something, I realize that there was no explanation in the first place!

That's right, this story seems to be written soo fast that you will find the characters talking about certain topics such as mentioning crucial enemies, when these enemies haven't even appeared at that moment in the story... as well the dialogue have vague details, and not much of a lead whatsoever when it comes to actually needing information in order to progress in the game.

Character background is really poor, and I mean poor enough to not even know nor understand what's everyone's
true role in the entire game... and if you really want to talk about confusing, just misread a simple name in a dialogue, you will be literarilly lost for the rest of the game... as characters don't use names when they start a dialogue... only their names are mentioned when someone mention them in what they have to say to them.

And for once, this is yet another game that uses no original character design, and for it's worse part, one of the characters uses an sprite of the opposite gender while it doesn't even matches his/her face!

Here is an example of a dialogue:

But if you still haven't gone insane yet, be aware... cause there will be bugs that explains part of the story! as well spoils two scenes and holds conversations of characters that supposedly are IN your party, however you haven't even met them! so watch where you travel... Mapping will look decent in some places, while in others they will look really empty, or not in contrast with the previous locations you just traveled.

Bugs are more complicated than you think, yes, problems with them spoiling the story, is just the beginning. Although bugs won't let stop you from advancing forward, however they will be really bad over certain technical problems... an example is a monster party you encounter in a part of the map, when you have to travel alone... there will be cocatrices that will stunt you and also paralize you... these effects will be deadly despite the character's health... for the fact that these beasts
will attack you around 15 times until it wears off from you... that if you are still alive.

Staying alive is crucial in this game... for once, you cannot save in the world map!!! and that's not to say that save points are really far from each location, as well there are around 5 of them for the entire game! some of them heal, maybe 2 of them, and one teleports you... but that's it.

As far as the gameplay, no engines... and I mean, NONE. Not even a simple add on in the game... the database also
is completely unbalanced, in a negative way. Monsters have high HP, heroes are completely weak and need to strike them around 10 times before they can die... also while items are cheap, weapons and armors are impossible to buy cause of their ridiculous expensive price... money and levels are almost impossible to adquire, as well as once you start advancing in the game, bosses will start becoming 3 times more powerful, making you spend 30 minutes fighting simple bosses.

The last boss is unbeatable unless you are past level 20 and with the strongest weapons... and there is a secret boss that you can fight after you beat the game, however, you will have no clue where to find him, unless you did your search and found a suspicious place, where he will be located at... don't feel bad, after all, even if you knew where he was, I wouldn't recommend even bothering taking the long trip and attempting to fight him... after all he is twice stronger than the invincible last boss, and in the end he gives you something you will not find the point in using, since everything in the game will be over... One thing that I liked about the game were the animations, although straight from the VX RTP's, they were used wisely.

The battle system is side-view based and it's the only script you will notice in the game:

The sounds in the game are all RTP, so do not expect anything new in this area... As far as the music goes, for a start there are only .oggs taken from Chrono cross and Soul calibur games... maybe 1 simple tune from a different game. Although these tunes were well chosen, while you are playing the game, you will have flashbacks of your old days when you used to play matches with your peers back in soul calibur III, trust me... while at the same time you will also feel that you miss playing chrono cross... but you will forget all I'm saying and get frustrated when you have to delete a couple of
things from your hard drive so you can install this game, it's 100mb of .ogg files, while about 10-12mbs are actual files that the game uses...

As my conclusion... all my review could be just summarized in one sentence... "too much size, for such low quality". The ending only lasts 5 minutes, and you only get to see it if you press the "decision key" two tiles south from the last boss charaset... that's right, after all there is one last bug that won't even let you finish the game after all the hard work and time spent playing it... ultimately, the game is short too, in terms of story... it is only long cause of the lack
of work done, mostly in the database...

The RPGMAKER VX has many great features that allow developers to create many things...
as it is more advanced from some of it's predecetors... unfourtunately, it takes a lot of dedication and imagination to come up with a game that anyone can enjoy... too bad, Advent isn't one of those games... if you are a novice using rpgmaker VX, then you might want to give this game a try, although you won't learn much since this game needs way too much improvement... but you can get familiar with what people create out there.
