Pirate's Quest - That's some booty you can keep!
Review by Tenchu-San
Not all that glitters is gold, and this doesn't even come close to shimmering. Pirate's Quest is confusing, awful, and everything in between!
The only thing that isn't that bad are the Graphics, which are 100% RTP from RPG Maker VX. I enjoy the RTP, and when well used, can look amazing.
The sound in this game is also mostly RTP, and fits well when it is used. There isn't much else to say about the sound because it doesn't really speak to you as a player, it just seems to be used as a tool and then moved on.
As for story, the story is rushed through in a brief and horribly written explanation. I'm a pirate who was party of a mutiny and now my former comrade has become a Pirate King and has decided to kill me? No, wait. I must kill him. The entire explanation and other dialog is written in an "You Must Go home Or You Will be killed Okay!?" fashion. The story is so awful that the only thing that could possibly rise it from the ashes would have to be the gameplay.
Yet... the gameplay just drives it further into the ground! After a brief explanation of the controls for VX, you rush into a map with no idea what to do except wander and around talk to people. However, just a few steps in... you're attacked by monsters that you can't attack, can't escape from, and can kill you in a few turns! Amazing design here folks, definitely.
In short, don't even bother with this Pirate's Quest. With a recycled storyline that is pretty much a BLATANT ripoff of Pirates of the Caribbean, and powerful enemies that you have no chance of beating. This Quest is one best left forgotten.
