Horror Games. There are those that rely on realistic explanations to make the scares seem more... feasible. There are those that take from the occult to scare us with what humanity fears most: the unknown. Lurking Under Life leans towards the latter, scaring us with quick images and loud sounds. The jumpy approach.
The graphics in this title are well used and give a dreary dark feel. The way they're used to terrify the player are effective at giving you quite a jump, but don't give that lasting scare that makes you want to shut it off... a good move. Nothing stands out of place and it is all put together in a fashion that helps you get settled into the reality presented before you.
The sound, well... it does what the graphics cannot do alone. It not only immerses you in the mood of being on edge, it helps you embrace it. The music is dreary and suspenseful, the sounds as something runs past your screen faster than you can notice... it's all put together in a fashion that complements the graphics and the gameplay. To give you a good scare.
The story helps set the mood, but doesn't really share many details until it's too late! You're just as clueless as the main character, which is an excellent approach to story-heavy RPGs so the player is surprised when the twists come in. Are there any? Well play and find out!
The gameplay is mostly comprised of solving puzzles, dodging traps and walking very, very, very... SLOW. The only frustrating part of this title is the slow walking speed and the total LACK of knowledge of what to do next. You wander from room to room touching anything that looks interesting in the vain hope that it will be useful in the future. Many a time you will run into a dead end and realize that the only way to continue is to walk to the other side of the building and pick up something that you thought was mere decoration. If there was some kind of graphic to show objects of interest, or at least some kind of journal that gave a narrative to help guide the player... then possibly the gameplay could redeem itself.
The scares are nice, the gameplay can be frustrating, but those who stick to it are well rewarded. If you're into a creepy independent title brought to you by... "the man". Then well, dig in and enjoy what's Lurking Under Life. The obscurity is a challenge, isn't it?
