Kidnapped Review
Dont underestimate the hearing abilities of old men.
Review by Zackwell
I managed to play this game through to the end, and I feel that I've managed to make a fair judgement.
I am personally a great appreciator of horror/suspense games, and this game managed to give me a decent chill.
A child is kidnapped and his friends selflessly make their ways into the dark forest house to rescue him...
It's a pleasantly quaint idea, that can be easily turned into a perpetual hell.
You are placed in the shoes of three children who choose to play hide and seek on the wrong side of the woods. It's getting dark, and John is nowhere to be found. The children quickly come to the conclusion that he must have been kidnapped.
You control Jessica, Mike and Bruno, three multitalented children. When you understand what's to be done, you can very quickly begin to understand the relations between the obstacles in your way, and the items you find. It would be much simpler if it were not for the 'Noise meter' in the corner of your screen. Thanks to this little thing, you will have to carefully evaluate the actions you make, lest you grab the attention of the kidnapper. Simple things such as opening doors and using switches prove to be your greatest enemies in this game, each action threatening to blow your cover and your safety.
The strangeness of the story is amplified by the sheer minimalistic properties of it's soundtrack. Deep strings and broken piano; both compliment the creepy atmosphere provided by the darkness of the settings. Some classical pieces are included, to incorporate the time-told effect that they have on films or games.
The simple effect of replacing the bulk of the maps with blackness creates an eerie, empty look.
From the very start, the game can build up feelings of forboding and dread. There are many things that can send chills down the player's spine, such as the abundance of blood used to write messages on the walls, or the disturbing diary entries scattered around the house.
The only potential downside to the game, is it's lack of action. If you're the kind of person that prefers faced paced games with little thought involved, then this isn't the game for you.
But there are many out there who like slow games that require a lot of thought.
All in all, I would rate this game 5.5/10
