Some hits and some misses

Review by Kinerex Shiomi

Destiny Gods gives me mixed emotions...what does this mean? Okay, well I want to hit it on the main aspects of the game.

Story- Not too much happening here, I mean, you have the main character Xayne (cool name btw) who is your typical main character. The story kinda just seems like it's a bit random. You wake up, go to the elder, then you go back home, wake up, go through a cave, then a forest, then a town, then another forest. The main focus so far that I've gotten, is to save a certain person from thieves (a bit cliche) I hate cliche's in stories. It drives me nuts...the people fear that the Gods will forsake them, and that the Gods will destroy the people. Pretty cliche concept, seeing how many games have the whole, Gods vs Humans story, not to say that this game is just held down by that.

Characters- Ugh, Xayne has a cool name, but in the start he looks like a complete loser. He has a bowl cut, and he just is a disappointment. After he realizes he has to save his friend, he dyes his hair and changes his armor (as to match his fighter graphic) why does he dye his hair? to show his allegiance. My question is to what? When you change sprites, his new sprite walks like a klunky moron. If you move him down, one legs stays down as if he is still walking. Same with moving him sideways. But in the menu he stands erect, so why cant he on the map??? I only acquired Xayne, so I don't know if other characters are too come or not.

Mapping: This is a huge hit and miss subject for me. Some maps are nicely designed (the towns) and then some make me want to puke (first cave, forests) in the cave, the basic route is the same. Go around in a circle, onto the next map until you leave. Then you go to a forest, and help some random hobo. You can't leave the forest until you find a sacred stone...if you go into this mans tent, you come into a room bigger then Xayne's home. A bit odd?? Some maps enthrall you, others make you want to punch your computer screen.

Battle: I HATED them. They had the same repetitive enemy sprites. In the cave you have a lot of variety. You can fight one bat, or two. I only had one battle where I fought one bat. The rest were two. Then you go into the forest. The only battle sprites? stupid looking thieves...Xayne starts with 630 HP. The bats did like 20 dmg per hit. Not too terrible. You get to the forest, and you get slammed by constant 70's and up. 630 doesn't last too long against a couple of 75's. I thought that showed imbalance. So once you get through the annoying forest, you get to the boss. Not only is he accompanied by 2 annoying thieves, the boss himself delivers hard blows of 150-190 dmg. Along with that, 2 hits of 75 from each theif. So 150 + 75 + 75 = 300. Not only is half your HP drained, the boss is faster then you, and hits you twice. 450 dmg in one turn. Your only defense? Drink potions like an alcoholic each turn then die.

Music: FF7's music is fantastic. Alternative edits are not. This game had consistent FF7 music, and they were all mostly alternative versions that didn't equal the greatness of the original OST's. I thought the makers put in some music where it was well deserved (the prophet speaking was an excellent choice) but other then that, the music kind of stank. The battle music was boring, and it made the battles feel the same way (as if fighting the same sprites over and over and over again wasn't boring enough) I just think that using FF7 for 90% of your places and situations is to cliche (everyone has 2 or 3 BGM's from FF7, but having like 50 is too much) FF7 is it's own game, so when I heard the songs, it made me think of FF7, not your game. It made your game seem faint to the glorious light of the games music you were using.

Other things that bothered me was the stupid stat system. With one stat point you could raise your max HP by 6. That sucks. I would need like 16 stat points to raise my HP by 100. But if i did that, i would lack in my other area's of stats, and get killed like a frickin pansy anyway. In one point early on, Xayne's friend says, "here's a mask to raise the users conception" when xayne asks "is it equippable?" his friend says, "no, its like a face protector thingy" (or something stupid like that) again, this makes me feel like the creator of the game was too lazy to think of a clever way to give Xayne the mask. When the elder (who's suppose to be wise) replies to Xayne, "oh ya!" I had to chuckle. That might be the dumbest thing ever for a wise old elder to say.

Grammar- Terrible. SO TERRIBLE. I felt unattached to the game because the grammar ruined it for me. A few grammar mistakes are expected, you had one or two every sentence. "I" was never capitalized, you had random words capitalized (for example: "Oh yeah, i Thought So") like, that makes no sense?? Bad grammar annoys me, and makes me think a two year old made the game.

One more thing I HATED WITH ALL MY HEART was when you would randomly step and all you see is "Haha" (next screen) "GoTCHA!!!!" then you battle 3 thieves. I thought it was clever the first time, after that it just pissed me the hell off. I felt like throwing my computer. Take those out, seriously. You don't have enough HP to be taking hits like that!

Redemption? Is it possible? Destiny Gods is riddled with horrible flaws and glitches. I don't think I could be convinced to play it again, unless I seen improvement from others. But I believe with some editing and creative thought processing, this game could go somewhere. I just can't get over the stupid sprites, battles, maps, and music rip-offs. It needs a helluva lot of editing, but I won't lie, a lot of time looks like it went into this game, and I applaud that.

IMPROVE, IMPROVE, IMPROVE!!!! I do want to play this game, but it needs some MAJOR FIXING before I try at it again.
