Dragon Fantasy II - Two decades, too late.

Review by Tenchu-San

RPGs. The agreed granddaddy of them all is the beloved (and often ridiculed) Dungeons and Dragons. From this basic system, other RPGs were spawned. In the 80's, the likes of Final Fantasy, Dragon Warrior, and others sprang forth and entertained those interested and properly equipped. Dragon Fantasy II, although not original by any means, holds enough of it's own to do a good job and revive the old school spirit that fans of the originals love.

The graphics are as retro 8-bit as you can get, and they're used extremely well. The maps are well-designed, everything fits cohesively, the NES spirit is captured and embraced in this title. If you're a fan of Final Fantasy or Dragon Warrior, and I mean the ORIGINAL NES cartridges, you know exactly what to expect.

The sound in this game fits the same scheme as the graphics, old school NES goodness. There's nothing you'll really jam to or want to buy a soundtrack for, (as they're recycled bits and pieces you'll find from various RPGs) but it won't bug you and it helps you get immersed in the old school charm that this title offers.

Dragon Fantasy 2 offers your basic RPG fare for a story, stop a big bad guy from destroying the world with crystals involved somehow. However, as my rule of thumb states: Cliches are allowed if used well. Our friend Ephiam has done so and done so well. The story is light and easy to follow... although what you need to do next is somewhat of a challenge, but like RPG's of old, just wander in a direction you've never been and you'll either die or reach the next point in the story. Like the rest of this title, it's nothing ground-breaking, just charming and enjoyable to play.

Speaking of play, the gameplay in this title holds true to it's NES roots and allows certain features like creating your entire party from the start (a la Final Fantasy uno.), thrashing monster after monster, and exploring dungeons. If you're an old school RPG fan, you know exactly what to expect, and how much to enjoy.

In short, you're not missing out if you skip this title, but you won't be worse off if you give it a look. Old school fans of NES RPG's who want to dive back into their roots and enjoy a story with some different answers to the age old variables should definitely give this a look. If you're new to gaming and this whole RPG Making thing, then take some time to play this title as well, as it will introduce you to RPGs the way the hardcore of us were: with 8-bit graphics and basic gameplay that is addictive and easy to comprehend.

I recommend it.
