Nexus Review
I HATE those bears!!! Nexus Review.
Review by Ulf Peddicord
Nexus was made to be a “traditional” RPG and it most definitely was..... but the word “traditional” is a nice way of saying: The same old RPG with really no innovation. But since I don't like starting off negative, let me cover the stronger points of this game.
First let's start with the story. You play as a young knight.... he's known as the protagonist because the author wants you to name him. Anyway, the world is separated into 3 kingdoms; 2 of which, Antaria and the Orc's tribe, are at war with each other. Eventually you meet up with Victoria and Edward (soldiers of the Eagle Squad) and this one girl named Theim (still not sure how you pronounce it), and the 4 of them help the Antarians beat the Orcs. Sounds simple right? WRONG! With botched technological experiments, demons, and zombies; this story gets a lot more deep. For the most part it's a pretty solid story. However, there were a few things that needed more work. First of all (spoiler alert), Victoria keeps calling the protagonist “Daddy's boy” among other things..... but as SOON as the protagonist saves Victoria's brother, she gives herself to him and they become lovers. I couldn't help but laugh at that because there was absolutely no build-up to that. Another flaw is when the protagonist meets up with his father and two girls with a story that was basically filler just so father and son can be reunited.... and as a result (spoiler), you really don't get to know the girls for very long.... there are ways to make this part better and I feel the author just made more work for himself.... however, these are a couple holes in an otherwise good story.
Another strong part of this game was the battle and leveling system. Now it is indeed a Side-view battle system and sadly enough it's one I've played with before. But from the many games I've played on here, I've never seen this system used as thoughtfully and professionally as this game. From the first time the protagonist threw his sword at an enemy, I knew I was in for something good. Here's how the leveling works: when you gain a level, you're given a certain amount of ability points which you use to make certain character attributes stronger... not only that, but they can learn new abilities. Sounds simple enough, but it works very very well.
So with a great story and battle system, what could possibly be wrong with this game? Well as I mentioned before, this is a traditional RPG which means: tons of places that are all basically designed the same. Whether it's a cave or forest or volcano or castle, these places had the same exact idea: door is locked. flip a switch somewhere. Door is open. Go through. Repeat. Door. Switch. Open. Enter. Door. Switch. Open. Enter. Door. Switch. Open. Enter. Door. Switch. Open. Enter.... you got the idea. And while this is happening, your constantly going into battles. For the most part, battles, whether regular or boss, aren't frustratingly difficult. Some of them are actually fun. But the places need a bit more innovation. This is when the word “traditional” becomes less attractive.
And last but NOT least..... grammar. Now I'm sure (and hoping) that this author's first language is not English and I would like say that this person has a lot of guts making a game with a language they haven't fully grasped yet..... but, man... the grammar is bad! “What the” becomes “Whatta”. Prepositions are absent half the time..... when the most coherent sentence is “go to hell!” you got a problem. But don't let this scare you! The game is very understandable and you'll be able to get the whole story and what's going on. However next time, please get someone who fully understands English to correct the script. Your RPGs will become a lot better for it.....
This game gets a 6.5 out of 10. It has a great story and battle system. The characters are likeable and the difficulty is fair almost all the time. However, bad grammar, cookie-cutter dungeons, and a few holes in storyline knocks it down a few pegs. Fix and grammar and I will put in one more point.
Final question to the author: Was an antidote ever made?
