Soul Shepherd Review
Average game, good mechanics
Review by bulmabriefs144
Let's face it, I'm into things that are roughly the quality of Final Fantasy (I therefore ate up Final Fantasy: Time and Again, and was sad when it ended). No, I don't mean the factory standard RPG that everyone thinks of when they think of an RPG that sells, I mean literally Final Fantasy. The game reinvents itself with each new version. Final Fantasy I was a side-scrolling RPG, breaking the whole tradition of Dragon Quest head-on play, and pretty much setting one of the few constants in the FF series, that of being a game where the player and the monster could both move and such. The other draw of Final Fantasy I was the ability to pick the character's classes, and upgrade them. Final Fantasy II (japanese) scrapped this and had original characters and a level system similar to Romancing SaGa, Final Fantasy III (japanese) scrapped that too and had the first job system, Final Fantasy IV had the common MP system also used by many of the later game and characters which changed class due to the story, Final Fantasy V was the return of the job system, etc.
But with the exception of Final Fantasy I, they all had one thing in common. A strong sense of plot, and (with the exception of Final Fantasy I and III) unique characters. I haven't played too far into it yet, it's very hard, but the game has already been listed as having a weak plot, and the characters beside the single main are literally soulless. This is like half a game to me, so I'm tempted to rate it as such. Nevertheless, since the game has a real sense of mechanics, and the battle system is fixed so levelling is not insanely easy, I'll add a point to my rating.
