The Contract : Deception Review
Live and Don't Learn
Review by KD648
It seems to me that all RPGVX games today are making the same mistake. They, for the most part, have great mapping, well balanced battle systems, and incredibly polished event coding and scripting. And yet, for some reason, no one can put a complete sentence together.
Now I'm not saying that anything can be golden the first time you put it on paper. There's always going to be mistakes laying the framework for a good story. But that's why we DOUBLE CHECK our work!
Obviously, I'm commenting on The Contract: Deception. For some reason, completely foggy to me, this game is the top rated game on this site. And I'm not going to stand here and tell you that it's a completely incompetent game, because it's not. The mapping is great, the battles work really well, and the premise (what I understood of it at any rate) is promising. What I AM going to stand here and tell you is that when I'm not focusing on the plot because I'm too busy trying to figure out what the developer meant to spell, there's a problem that should have been fixed.
A great game is immersive, meaning that while you are playing, you forget that it's a game. You look at the clock and go "really? It's that late already?" I never had that problem with The Contract: Deception because I literally had to read each text box three times before I could figure out what they were trying to say, and I still couldn't figure out what was actually going on.
This game isn't truly horrendous, but it astounds me that it could be ranked above projects like Linus by bluegroup. Sure, it was a demo that lasted, like 40 minutes, but after I was done with the Demo I was shocked that it lasted that long. And here's the thing, The Contract: Deception had a much better battle system. The programming is much farther along, but frankly, the bottom line is I don't want to have to "work" to play a game. When you have so many hideous spelling mistakes in your game, you're asking the player to do the mental work that you weren't willing to, and no one plays a game to work.
After playing The Contact: Deception for 40 minutes, I had to shut it down because I was physically tired. The amount of focus I needed to re-read everything three different times and put the pieces together was exhausting and I still don't understand all of what happened. The Contact: Deception isn't a truly horrible game. In fact, the "game" part of it is really well put together, but I shouldn't have to try and figure out how to spell your dialogue. That's your job.
