Meh...It was hit and miss: A Review of Dream Endeavor

Review by eien_tsubasa

I've been away from this sight for a long time, and I just noticed that a few new games came up. So, I take a peek at a game called "Dream Endeavor", and I saw a few of the comments:

"Seriously, this is the only completed vx game that is actually very good. I mean: Good story, great mapping and the battle system is actually challanging."

"Fantastic game!"

and "Excelent game!"

So naturally, I thought this would be a good game. And naturally, I was played. This game is boring, easy, and nothing you haven't seen in other RPG's. But, I'd rather you read this review than hear me rant.

Alright, here's the story (if you were too dumb to read the description, which reveals the ENTIRE STORY PLOT). The story's focus is Flayde, your average trash-talking, badass main character, who is captured by the Aesir Corporation to mine Flakk, an ore that powers the entire world. After much time there, he escapes, very easily I might add. After his escape, Flayde begins to experience strange but vivid dreams that fortell of the worlds fate. He then meets up with various allies and together the group seeks to destroy the Aesir Corporation and stop their plan for world domination.

Okay, to be fair, the story itself sounds pretty solid, and you can make some pretty interesting stories with it. But good stories must be told well, which brings me to my first problem with the game:

They story begins very, very, VERY slowly. Literally the story starts with a bunch of flashbacks and Cristian Slater-esque monologues. I can understand that the creator wanted to tell the beginning of the story through the main characters perspective, but the event itself was so long, that after a while you just stop caring. Its possible to explain the plot without access padding.

And speaking of padding, the story gives us way too much info without explaining anything, thus leaving us with unanswered questions. Like, where did Flayde live before the events of the game? Who was his childhood friend? If the Aesir Corporation captures people by force, then why did they send Flayde's best friend a letter addressing her capture? How is it possible to mentally resist a mind altering drug? Shouldn't it make mentally resisting the drug that much harder? If the creator provided answers to these questions, then this wouldn't be a problem.

The battle system itself is broken, easy, and ill-conceived. The battle is sideview of course (I'm shocked...:/) and the usual one button kills all game. The monsters are insanely weak, and the bossed are just as easy as the monsters but have mounds of HP and DEF. The main characters are obscenely unbalanced. They have totally broken damage output, making battles that much boring. Although to be fair, the battle system was very fast paced to compensate, but otherwise it doesn't the battle system's blandness.

But the one thing that really bugged me was the games soundtrack. I have never seen such a hodge-podge of videogame themes in any RPG EVER. I've run into the FFXIII soundtrack, Wild Arms 2, Kingdom Hearts II, it was painful. I keep stressing originality, but you know, screw it. It's been happening in every game so far, so there's no pint in stressing it any longer...

Rating:

-Long although good story opening
-unexplained scenarios
-boring battle system
-completely unoriginal soundtrack

6.5

I do admit it was bad, but I also admit that this was the only game I played with a story that didn't suck. It was solid and had decent closure, it just needed explaination. All the creator needs is explain a few things. Other than that, it was hit and miss. NOTE TO THE CREATOR: Don't be afraid to clarify things in the future. And try to explain your story without stretching it. Do that and the story's fine.
