Legend of Shadow Review
The legend of shadow... an allright game.
Review by antifarea
I never really played many game maker games, but from around the 20 I have tried out, the Legend of Shadow seems to have a bit of difference from the rest of the games out there... however, just a slight difference, if we were to really compared it. And you'll know why...
About the story... there isn't really an actual story, aside from what anyone can percieve from the start till the end of the entire game... allow me to explain: the game starts with a short event-based cutscene that shows a girl being kidnapped by two ninjas. Afterwards you get to see shadow in the forest, which pretty much gives the idea that she is his girlfriend and he's out to save her, just exactly how the original nintendo game is. Throughout the game you get to travel to places while fighting a lot of chinese opponents, from ninjas to sorcerers and even strong bosses that throws grenades on you... all until you reach your main goal and confront the last boss.
The gameplay, considering how most game maker games are out there, this one does make some difference on it,
in a positive way. It is sort of fast paced traveling and action, but since some of the levels are long and confusing, you might find yourself realizing you go forward and forward, yet in reality you are not going nowhere... This game is hard to play, not because enemies are hard to beat, but because how it was set up, it's what causes it to be hard.
In this game things don't ever dissapear... if a ninja enemy throws a shuriken at you (basically thats what the majority of them do most of the time), you can run and run, and it will still be going in the direction it was thrown... most of the time this is annoying for the fact that you get to encounter multiple enemies jumping around and throwing stars and coming towards you... so in the end you will get hit somehow since there isn't much to defend yourself besides swinging the sword to deflect some of the attacks, while still trying to kill some of the enemies.
Also if you ever plan to play this game, make sure that you have time to play it through for a while until you beat it, considering the fact that there is no save, nor passwords to continue where you left off last time played... you can die all you want, and select to continue from the beginning of the current level.
The game graphics are allright in some levels... while in others it's just kinda painful... you start in a decent forest design, then you enter this cave with horrible layout... then you get to fight the boss and things look much more better... in other words,
the visuals are a little bit out of balance, with literarilly up and downs level through level... however, the animations in general are decently done. And for the kind of game that this is, it fits well enough. The title screen and the sections to it are well done,
unfourtunately this might feel as a hoax in terms of how the graphics are expected to be in overall.
The Music that plays, is your neighborhood ninja classic tunes, with what I can assume might be midis, considering the low quality. The sounds are okay, mostly fit to each one of the situations given... although there could be more sounds involved, it would have given the game a better feeling.
The legend of shadow can be entertaining and fun, only if you have the patience for it, and have tolerance for it's up and downs, and it's frustrating parts for people who just started playing and are just getting used to the whole platform action set-up. Once I first saw it uploaded on the site, and saw the screenshots, I always wanted to try it out... cause in my head I somehow thought it was going to be a very exciting experience... however, this wasn't really the case. This might be a game you want to play after you beated all the games you like (including platformer games), and don't have anything else to play.
