A Fun, but Short Ride

Paper Mario Eggstreme is a mini-demo with a lot of heart but not too much else, sadly.
PME is not an RPG. That needs to be established immediately, so that one may understand why this game is judged so differently. It's actually a shooting game akin to Lethal Enforcers. The goal of the game is to rid Yoshi's Island of the pesky Goombas, Koopas, and Bowsers that roam the island. To do so, Yoshi is given a batch of eggs which he uses to take out foes, and fruit which replenishes his egg clutch.
Obvious biological conflict aside, it's a wonderfully simple gameplay premise. It strips away all the fancy-yet-useless add-ons that plague games of its ilk. The mechanics work brilliantly, and there's even a gravity effect implemented in the game. The whole experience is very unique. However, the gameplay actually works against the game later, as the levels become slightly repetitive as they go on. Without additional challenges or gameplay aspects the player is left doing basically the same thing in level 5 as they are in level 1. Hopefully this game will be expanded and this can be added to.
The presentation is simple but completely effective. The backgrounds and enemies are taken directly from the Paper Mario series, so there's no garish or stand-out objects. It meshes well together, but players who don't like the Paper Mario aesthetic may find the whole package a little bland.
The music is fairly sparse. To be fair there are only five levels, so too much music would have made for a spastic time. Also a quick trigger finger can end each level before the music becomes repetitive. The sounds are actually more plentiful, and are both well-timed and well-placed.
Overall, Paper Mario Eggstreme is a fun experiement that really should be expanded upon. Definitely give it a try to see an inventive usage of RPG Maker 2003.
