Ummm....: A Review on White Trigger

Review by eien_tsubasa

I...I really don't know how to say this without sounding cynical, but this game is hilarious. The "story", the characters, the music, the facesets, everything in this game is just down right silly. But you may be asking, "Just how silly is this game?" Well, for all the unfortunate ones out there, kick your feet back and enjoy the review on "White Trigger".

Okay so the story opens up with Ivan, who's running away from a bunch of guards. You later find out that he is commanded by a robed man (obviously the bad guy. Thanks THOAMS1) whom I thought for a while was Ivan's pimp. But in actuality, he was the one who ordered Ivan to, and get this, single handedly destroy and entire town with nothing but a Cheap Sword. With the assistance of common sense a the plot device known as "random-screaming-flashback-of-doom", poor Ivan is unable to do the clearly-impossible-one-man-mission. The robed gigolo, thinking that Ivan is useless, knocks him out in the most Looney Tunes way in RPG history:

Robed Man: Ivan, look over there!
Ivan: Where?
Robed Man:

By the way, I'm dubbing this "Hilarity Number One", with much more on the way, much to my discontent.

Okay so after that idiotic situation, Ivan has a flashback where he fights a guard while breaking through some facility and has a flashback during the flashback (Hilarity Number Two). He wakes up next to an old man named Jack (whom I like to call Google Earth) ), who for some reason is nice enough to give Ivan a home, tend to his wounds, give him a place to live, and even helps him look for a school to enroll. What? Is he like a truancy officer?

Before he can find a school though, Ivan's new town gets attacked by vicious monsters. And by monsters, I mean the dragon from Age of Magic.

Oh! And did I forget to mention? This game is a subtle but horrible throwback to "Age of Magic". The quest in Age of Magic where you help a couple get back together and make pasta for some random guy are in this game, so if you loved the boring quests without any interaction before, you'll just adore them in White Trigger. You even get the quest badges too. Aren't you glad to see recycled material?

Okay I'm wrapping the story up, so after a classmate gets captured by someone from Ivan's past, he saves her and they travel southward to find the classmate's brother.

Oh, and I forgot to mention: He learns that he is code named "Project X" after scanning his hand on a fingerprint analyzer, another example of THOMAS1's amazing use of Forced Exposition. Man, my memory is out of whack.

Alright, obviously this game has its share of problems. One of the problems in White Trigger is the music. Normally, I love original music, which this game does indeed have, but the music in the game really doesn't fit anywhere. This is the story about an anmesiac swordsman looking for his past, but then you hear this happy blues music. And the battle theme has the same tranqualizer effect as the battle theme for Final Fantasy VIII: it's boring, it's repetitive, and has the magical power of putting you to sleep upon hearing it. If you're gonna add original music, at least add music in the game that works. And as for the battle theme, try to keep this in mind: the purpose of the battle field is more than just music. It turns the player on and off from the overall battles themselves. So if the battle theme is boring, it will also effect the battles themselves.

And on the topic of battles, the battles in White Trigger are boring and can be won by continuously pressing your "Z" button like how a cat presses a single key on a piano. Monster do okay damage, but Ivan's damage is boarderline-broken. On top of that, EXP is easy to get, you literally gain 98.18 EXP on your first battle. It makes monster battles that much unimportant if monsters are just rag-dolls filled with EXP. Make the monsters harder so that all that EXP is worth it in then end.

Alright, time to wrap this up.

-Boring and predictable story
-Near unbalanced battle system
-awkward musical score
-OVERUSE OF EXPOSITION

2.5

Alright, I was gonna give this a 1.5, but I gave it a 2.5 because of those hilarious bloopers. These where obviously put there by accident or not looked over, but I still think the baby faced old man is hilarious. And the whole"flashback on top of flashback" thing was pretty awful, but in a funny way. Other than that, the game needs TONS of work. If you want my serious opinion, then personally, I don't think you learned from Dr. Faust's "Age of Magic" review, because the two are (albeit different stories) are almost exactly the same. Just fic this please.
