Vacant Sky Vol.1: Contention Review

Don't get me wrong, this sort of effort on a game is certainly worrthy of a ten. It looks like they recorded their own music, designed their own battle system, and tweaked several of the graphics to do a great deal of effects (such as the overhead view on the first chapter). For that matter, I extremely like both the opening songs.
What effectively knocked 2 entire points off a 10 score is this: Railroading. In case you aren't familiar with the term, it relates to a plot that appears to be fixed on course as if bolted to a track. Although I like a firm sense of plot as much as the next person, there are several points in the game where the enemies faced are much harder than I would like, and there appears to be nothing you can do to prepare. There are practically no random enemies that I've encountered so far (correct me if I'm wrong, but if I am, I've gone through above five towns and missed them all). The same is true of item shops, when I was at the first town, Auria rejected the armor because it wasn't "trendy" and because she thought her town too safe to need such equips. Then we get through Weapon and head toward the portal, and most of the stores turn out to be closed. The very next battle you run into is about five heavy-hitters, which wiped out my party of 4 fairly easily, since I was poorly equipped.
The miniquests would be a big help, only several of them ended up "incomplete" because I couldn't seem to get in touch with a key element. I would have loved to model, but Auria kept saying no. I spent a good hour wandering about town trying to find George to no avail. The woman in one town said she wanted to get her husband at the church. What church? I faced 2 mobs the very next screen and got led away by the "demon."
Overall, a professional job, with good music, good effects, and good plot. But if I can't figure out how to train, I won't be able to enjoy that plot, music, etc. much more.
