This game...: A review of Glacia

Review by Dr. Faust

This game...
There's no other way to describe it except... it's good. As for why, let's go on with the review of captainregal's Glacia.

The Story:

The game opens with the young prince, Rain, getting out of bed only to hear from his mentor that someone is plotting to assassinate him and already got to the king. Rain also finds out that it was his wife, Lailah, who plotted to kill him and the king in order to claim the throne for herself. After Rain escapes, the rest of the game involves him looking for proof of his lineage in order to reclaim the throne from Lailah. What? No crystals? No evil empire? No team of scrappy, young teenagers saving the world from a tainted god sealed away on the dark side of the moon by their predecessors who also happen to be the parents of the main characters? Is this story, dare I say it, GOOD? And before you go, "Boo, you're just saying that 'cause blah-di-blahdi-blah", Let me first say that YES, it is difficult to create an original story nowadays since almost everything has already been tried before. I will admit, Glacia's storyline sounds very slightly similar to FF12, however it doesn't seem like Lailah's going to turn into a demon and hole herself up in a tower in space anytime soon. In other words, the story is about one human being stuggling against another human being.

The characters that join Rain, except maybe Spider, all have some sort of connection to the main character, which not only gives us more insight on Rain's history, but the others as well. They also communicate with eachother throughout the story, an important part of, what I always tend to rant about, character development.

Music:

Mostly tracks that i'v never heard of, but the ones I have heard before are from Atelier Iris, Golden Sun, FF9, Wild Arms 2, and two songs from Maestro Rage from newgrounds. There's some very good music here and they tend to fit the location very well.

Gameplay:

Yep, it's the sideview battle system. I still somehow dislike its overuse on RRR, but looking past that for a bit, the enemies are very well balanced, it's challenging without being overly difficult. The monsters weren't just taken from the presets in the database and just placed in random points in the story.

There's a bunch of quests in the game to keep you from just bee-lining through the story, and there's plenty to explore in the expansive world of Glacia.

Problems:

There are probably just a few small issues id like to adress before I wrap this up and that's:

-Some grammar/punctuation errors: There's quite a few in there but not enough to throw you off too much.

-The odd Avatar Job Classes: And no, not the Na Vi, I mean Avatar: The Last Airbender. I just found it strange that there were benders in this world. If it's possible, I would find a way to change that.

-The Alchemy system: It wasn't a bad idea to add it, but as you go through the game, you find alchemy to be a tad useless.

To sum it up, Glacia's good, but it's not flawless either. This game gets a 7.5 for story and lots of exploration opportunities, i'm definitely looking forward to seeing more from captainregal.
