When at first you don't succeed...A review of Blizzard Planet

Review by eien_tsubasa

"If at first you don't succeed, try and try again". When applied to everyday life, this means you shouldn't give up on something you failed at. When applied to Blizzard Planet, this means add menial changes to an unbalanced game. To be honest, I took a look at the old Blizzard Planet that the former Eien_Tsubasa (now Dr.Faust) wrote, and I thought that would be enough to help the creator fix the game. But as fate would have it, Blizzard Planet 10.5 comes out. With that, I was filled with hope, and was determined to see some fixes done. But, yet again there were problems. So, let's take a look at Blizzard Planet.

If you didn't already know, Blizzard Planet is the retarded brother and sequel to Thief VX. The game opens up with Thief, the final boss of the last game, without any memory of what happened. Meanwhile Huewy (I may have spelled that wrong)has regained his body and is living with that flamboyant swordsman from the last game. They venture into a cave, and enter a town being controlled by an army led by swordsman, the fiendish Rico Suave of the Thief series. At this point, they meet Ulrika, and from there, wiley hijinks ensue. From Ulrika's borther George and friends running from giant monsters to FF8 music, to traversing Blizzard Planet with the infamous Thief himself.

As the creator posted, many new "changes" were added to Blizzard Planet. And when I say changes, I don't mean monster balances, new items and weapons, or balanced spells. NO WAY! That would be HERESY! With this I address the first problem within Blizzard Planet.

ALL THE CHANGES MADE TO BLIZZARD PLANET ARE EXTERNAL!

All the creator do was add a useless rage system, a skill slot system, a spice of icon sets, and a dash of Yanfly scripts here and there. Not a single change was made to the game's overall balance. If there were changes, they were VERY menial, and I mean menial. The dragon boss you fight when you encounter George is now a demon, and some of the monsters in Blizzard Planet aren't as broken as the first Blizzard Planet. The only critical change I saw is that the character's limit breaks are heavily unbalanced and do rediculously high damage, and on top of that come out very quickly. For instance, Huewy's Power Arrow does over 1000 damage and comes out in one turn. The creator could have either reduced the damage on that limit break, or make the skill come out a lot slower. Limit Breaks are so unbalanced that you have to rely on them in every boss fight, gaining limit gauge before the fight then unleashing the fury on those unfortunate boss.

My other problem, which was already stated by Dr. Faust, is that there isn't a single village in sight, so all the equipment you need has to be dropped by either dropped by monsters or found in treasure chests. All that money you saved up never gets used. So whats the point of money? If you never use it, then why is it there to begin with? I mean, the least you can do is throw in a random item vendor guy or something, but this idea clearly went over the creator head, much like other game creators on this website.

Another problem lies with the monster balance. I mean, its netter in comparison to the first Blizzard Planet, but in all honesty, all the creator sis was reduce the damage they all did and give them tremendous amounts of HP. The Soul Wisps had to be the most annoying monster in the game. It had tremendous life and over the top defense values. But the one thing that made it annoying was that it did little to no damage. Its like getting bitten by a cockroach you can't kill. Quick tip creator: INCREASING HP LOWER MONSTER DAMAGE IS A CHEAP BALANCE COP-OUT! Take the time to make sure monster are balanced in damage, HP, and all other statistics. I can see you tried to make them challenging, but don't do it in a way that ALL the battles just become annoying.

The final problem I had with the game was the Shiva battle.

*sigh*....where do I start...

First, I KNOW he named it after the Final Fantasy summon/eidolon/esper. You do know that Shiva is based on the Bhuddist god of destruction, right? He wasn't an ice goddess, so drop the stereotype. Second, that had to be the most speratic boss battle. I mean, she just appeared out of nowhere without any purpose, a definite lame decision on the creators part. My final and most hated thing about this boss is that you can kill her in ONE TURN with Thief's Limit Break. If you want a boss to be difficult, have the boss RESIST INSTANT DEATH. Fix this in the future, please?

Alright. I wrapping this up.

*glitter-decorated game with little internal changes.
*unbalanced skills
*annoyingly unbalanced monster
*barely any shops to replenish items or weapons
*THE SHIVA BATTLE

3.5!

Honestly, aside from Vigour of the Fellowship, this has to be the highest score I ver game. I was going to give it a 2.5, but I changed my mind because this game has potential of getting fixed. I mean, if the cxreator was stubborn enough to mess it up 10 time, maybe he'll use the 11th to fix it. 11th time's a charm, right? Well that the score I gave it,nothing more nothing less.
