Zenan Defense... Space Invaders with Frogs!

Sometimes all a game really needs to be good is have a simple premise and engaging gameplay. Zenan Defense takes your core Space Invaders gameplay and throws a Chrono Trigger skin over it, starring one of the party members from the original game: Frog.
The graphics in this title are well put together and are pleasing to the eyes. They flow well and just get the job done. Sprites from enemies in Chrono Trigger are used to replace the aliens of Space Invaders and the animations for being hit and attacking are either original or also used from the original Chrono Trigger game.
The sound in this game is half and half. The music is horrible: poor quality MIDI's that aren't even good by MIDI standards. However the sounds are well used (although frantic) and get the job done.
The extent of a story in this title is comprised of a brief intro explaining what made Frog who he is now, and why you're even slashing energy beams at monsters as they advance upon you. To make it simple: Frog is defending a bridge from Magus' minions in order to prevent Magus from taking over the kingdom of Zenan.
The gameplay is your basic Space Invaders formula where several rows of enemies rotate from left to right and moving down one row closer to the player as they complete moving from left to right. The player plays as Frog and uses different attacks such as a basic sword blast (that gets the job done most of the time) and a heavier sword blast or some elemental blast spells that all accomplish the same goal. (Their only real use is during a boss battle where you attack the same enemy and want to cause as much damage as possible.) You are constantly under a barrage of rocks and energy blasts so moving around (with no defenses mind you, aside from a dmg reducing block) is crucial. The gameplay is engaging and the difficulty curves up at a nice, challenging pace.
In short, this game is a good time waster that you can play if you want a Chrono Trigger themed Space Invaders with some nice boss battles to mix things up. Aside from some shotty music, this Game Maker title does an excellent job of entertaining the player. I recommend it.
