A difficulty godsend: A review of Brightdown
Review by eien_tsubasa
Alright! It's about time a good game came up! Sorry for the delay, by the way. I took some personal time off to not only finish my comic, but to mentally recover from the awfulness of the Sonic RPG. And lo-and-behold, I come back to check on Brightdown, a game thats been on my radar for weeks now. And Its actually pretty good. Well, why am I still talking when I could just tell you about it.
The story starts off on a slightly generic, but subtle note. The begins with Kay, who had recently lost his memories (The game allows you to skip the intro, much to my regret). He is found by an old man, who nurses his wounds until he recovers. Kay wakes up and immediately tries to leave, despite his injuries. The old man insists however that he should rest, but changes his mind when he bares witness to Kay's determination and drive to find his memories as well as his family.
To be fair, although the story started off shaky, it was a good way to start the story. It wasn't exaggerated or overblown. It wasn't quick and time consuming. It was very subtle and not only told you the main character's overall quest, but allowed his personality (that of a strong-willed youth) to shine through. It was a good change of pace.
The characters in the story are pretty likable. Kay isn't some tight-wad knight despite the quest that lies before him. He's delightfully goofy, and a bit of a coward. However the way his personality is applied to certain parts of the game fits REALLY well, and makes watching his goofy antics that much enjoyable. There are some bits of slapstick here and there, but they're actually good and not a failed attempt on humor.
And now the battle system. Its sideview battle of course, but this is the only game i played where its used to its fullest extent. There are no 50 foot giant monsters, as they're all evenly sized, which can be said for the battle animations as well. But the one thing that won me over was the game's difficulty. The monsters did a fail amount of damage, but it wasn't too overly broken. I'm man enough to admit that I died once, but that was because I didn't bother training my character. Once I leveled, I could actually SEE the results of my efforts. Battle weren't hard and I made use of the character's skill pool. And when I was use to those monsters, there were more that were much stronger than I was, forcing me to train my character again. This is the example all other games should follow, why they don't is still beyond me....
The game also utilizes a interesting way to learn skills. You obtain certain skills depending on your weapon, which I thought was a new change of pace.
I almost forgot to mention the skill animations, which were clean and all custom made. He didn't just slap on the default animations. You could actually see the effort put into it.
The only problem that I did have was the fact that the game allows you to skip the intro. I normally wouldn't mind this except the intro tells most of the games storyline, so once you skip it, you miss out on a lot, but again, that was the only problem I had.
Rating Time!
-Subtle story
-Likable characters
-Well done battle system
9.5!
I was pushing a 10, but the skipable intro still kind bothers me. Other than that, its apparent the the creator has a very good understanding when it comes to game making. NOTE TO THE CREATOR: Put up some tutorials. You don't know HOW many of these people need your advice. Other than that, keep up the good work.
