The FINAL BOSS: A Review on Kingdom Fantasy II
Review by eien_tsubasa
Alright. I'm just going to get to the point. No more openings, no more jokes, no more clever said-ways. I'm just gonna tell it like it is, and if the creator or anyone else has a problem with this review, they can personally message me. But this review has to be done, and it has to be done NOW. So without further ado...
THIS GAME IS BAD!
I have reviewed a ton of games, but never have I encountered such a worthy contender. I mean there are a few games that I said were bad in my review, but THIS is just...just...painful. With that, Kingdom Fantasy II will be my final boss, the ultimate battle. And because this is the ultimate battle, I will describe to you in full detail the evils which is this game. So now, its time to review Kingdom Fantasy II.
The setting of the story takes pace in a time where a catastrophe befell the world, destroying all existing life except for small parts of Europe (Italy, England, Spain and a few others). The Reishmund (spelt it wrong, sorry) and the Vatican Empire are plunging closer to the fires of war over the surviving world.
As all this is happening, the story sporadically begins with two sisters, a White Priest named Leona, and a Dark Priest named Scorpio. Basically it begins with them talking about nothing until we learn that they have to return to their hometown of Tutu and see the High Priest Zoke. After some brainless monster mopping, the two twins finally reach their destination where they learn of their quest. They are to stop the two clashing armies from fighting each other and defeat the Four Prophets, and by doing so, halt the coming of Lucifer. So they travel to Pueblo, the start of their journey, as they meet terrifying monsters and allies to help them on their quest to save the world.
Is the game as cool as it sounds? Eh...no. But it is as lame as it sounds. So I will (in detail) describe the characters and their goods and bads.
Leona (Referenced from the starsign Leo):
Leona is the typical hero archetype. She wants to save the world because its the right thing to do, she keeps her Sin-Child sister Scorpio in line ( I'll get to Scorpio at a later time) and finds everything that's destroyed or desecrated very, very bad.
Goods:
Despite the fact that she's a priest, she hits like a truck. Personality wise, she's kind and always wants to see the good in people. One secret that you may not know is that she has the ability to throw her voice so that she sounds like Elena, ironically another priestess from Grandia II. She likes to keep that a secret, though.
Bads:
Leona is one of many characters in this game that blinked red on the lame-o-meter. Why is that, you ask? Is it her personality? Well honestly if I said yes, I would be lying.
She really doesn't have much of a personality at all. She responds to everything with a goody-goody quote like, "Sister that's wrong!" or "Global devastation? How awful...". Her girl scout personality is WAY to over-the-top, and eventually hearing her voice will set the player into a bottomless rage. In most RPG's, heroism is more subtle and usually surfaces in the end of the game. But Leona starts of that way, so it makes the game annoying as time goes on. This makes the player lose interest in the character all together, which is bad considering characters are ample to any RPG.
In battle, Leona's skill plot is useless. She doesn't learn a single offensive spell unless you either wait till level 7 or give her the Ice spell you bought. Other than that she has Twin Cast, in which she throws her voice to sound like Millenia from Grandia II to heal all allies, and a scan skill that doesn't work. Other than these, Leona learns a bunch of useless status changing spells. She gets better later on, but other than that her skill set is nothing short of mediocre.
Scorpio (namesake from the starsign, Scorpio)
While Leona is the goody-goody girl scout trooper, Scorpio is the hellsih menacing woman-child Priest who won't stop until the player realizes for the 1,343rd time that she's the bad sister.
Goods:
Well, I'll at least say that she's a godsend in comparison to Leona. In battle she has higher magic attributes in battle, making her an ideal spellcaster. She still hits like a truck though. She too also has the power to throw her voice to sound like Grandia II characters.
Bads:
Ugh....Where do I start...
Alright, I heard of evil twins, but Scorpio sells it more than a Billy Mays ad. Its like she made a self mission to make sure the player knows she's evil by giving herself a bunch of over-blown and obvious lines, as well as character concepts. I mean, she starts the game off with devil wings, swears vulgarly, flirts with various boys, and other acts of evil.
I have found out that literally in the span of 15 minutes, that right, 15 minutes, Scorpio commits FOUR OF THE SEVEN DEADLY SINS! I'M NOT JOKING!
SLOTH- Gets bored while Zoke is explaining the crisis at hand concerning the war and Lucifer.
GLUTTONY- Says the food in the train sucks and wish she had better food. Pretty gluttonous if you ask me. This also leads to her third sin, GREED.
LUST- Flirts with the young warrior you meet in Pueblo, and won't shut up about meeting boys.
She also does other heinous acts, one of my favorites is when she hears the up-and -coming fate of the world and laughs because it sounds "silly". I mean...good crispy jesus. I know she's supposed to have a demon inside her, but this is just WAY out there. Now that I think of this, how was she even recognized as a Priest? Aren't they noble and just? Scorpio is just flat-out evil. Does she have to grow devil horns for Priest Zoke to realize that she's a devilish fiend? Alright, long story short, she's evil and will keep telling us she's evil until we acknowledge it.
Sagi (named after Saggitarius)
Well....I don't know. He really doesn't stand out. He's more like the Wikipedia of the group. He always has info on something about the world or something else. Other than that, he's very bland and boring. He helps you get to Reishmund but other than that, he doesn't do anything else. Although he can throw his voice to sound like Ryudo from Grandia II.
All right now my problems with the game. First is the mapping: it silly. You can walk through hill and mountains, but not through tables. You can walk over rocks, but not over weeds. I don't know if that catastrophe messed up the worlds physics, but if thats not the case, the creator should have checked his tilesets, not that this would solve every problem this game has. Towns look like rediculous hodge-podges. Some buildings look like alright while other don't. The creator just needs to work on them, but otherwise, still look goofy.
The next problem lies with the townsfolk. Now, I know this sounds silly, but its been bothering me since the start of the game. I have never seen so many Final Fantasy and anime throwbacks in one game, EVER. Sofar (and I have been counting) I saw 6 Black Mages, 3 Tifas, 4 Aeriths, 5 Clouds, 2 Cids (in the same ton NEXT TO EACH OTHER), 3 Vincents, 2 Yuffies, 1 Ksmina, 1 Beatrix, 1 Chocobo and a TON on Moogles.
WOW! No that is silly. And the best part is that the creator has these character walk about like theres not problem. Was there some decease created by the Catastrophe's aftermath that tore open a dimensional barrier between this world and the game/anime world? Did the resulting blastwave create FF clones? Explain, creator! EXPLAIN!
And lastly the battle system. Now as much as I loved the battle themes of Eternal Sonata and Grandia II, I can only weep when I hear them in this incredibly broken game. Mages hit like trucks, and monster hit like wimps. Even the boss in the sewers was nothing but a joke. I think the only time I ever had to heal in battle was in the bombshelter ruin with the clearly ripped Porings from Ragnarok. The battle systems is SBS system, which I can tolerate, but the the battle system itself is broken at best. Wanna destroy bosses. Just infinitely press the "Z" button and watch those monster explode.
My other problems is that spells and skills are queued, meaning you have to wait until the skill's ATB gauge reached the maximum amount. In a game like FFXII, which was very passive, there was delay during spell queue, and the gauge went up relevent to your SPD stat. But in Kingdom Fantasy II, the gauge increases VERY SLOWLY, which personally made me not use them. And did I need to, other than the Porings, I never needed magic other than heal spells because the Action Gauge made it that much unworth it. Take out the skill queue, and the ame becomes boarder-line playable.
Okay, enough of this. Rating:
-Over the top characters
-broken battle system
-random throwback characters
-slow skill queue
-weird mapping
2.5!
I was going to add the broken english into this review, but after reading one of his documents in the folder, I found out that he isn't really native to our language. But other than that, this game is bad. If you want bad characters, broken characters, and silly maps, I would highly recommend this game. Otherwise...
