These review names are hard to come by....A Review on Fireheart-Legend of the Paladins

Review by eien_tsubasa

Dating back to the earliest points of my childhood, I've always loved books. Words would create vivid pictures in my mind suck me into the characters and even the world itself. So when I began to play Fireheart and learned that it was based off of a story, I was expecting beautiful dialogue and things of the like. However Firebrand became the exact opposite of this and here's why.

-What's Good

I loved the original art done by the creator, which tells me he may have put much time to his game enough to add them. Other than that, there wasn't much.

-What's Not

To be honest when I saw that the game was based from someone's story I thought the dialogue would be decent at best, however this wasn't the case. Some sentences were arranged oddly. Characters would speak eloquently and then change it up entirely, so I had trouble trying to figure out their personalities. My guess was that the writer wanted his characters to speak in a poetic fashion, but tried to add his own style of dialogue, only to have it crashing down on him. Or perhaps it was hard to portray the characters from his book to the game, which is understandable by the way.

My other problem with the story is that I had a hard time trying to find the game's central point of view. First this last boss demon starts talking all these hosts he's possessed to transcend time to exact his revenge, blurting the entire backstory to the player, and then immediately switches to the hero. This also made it easy to find out the plot centering the main character. Demon talking about finding a host, and the hero wakes up after have a dream about the demon. What could this mean? DUH-DUH-DUUUUUN!

The battles weren't my biggest concern, but I feel must still be adressed. Side view battle system is okay, but this game really doesn't have the battlers necessary for it. So you'll find yourself getting attacked by spiders who lunge at you party thorax first; a hilarious but simple mistake. Try looking for sprites that are more suited to sideview battles in the future. Other than that, the battles were fine, I guess. Monsters where slightly difficult, attacks weren't hella broken, and the party's overall damage output was okay.

I gave this game the score it got for one simple reason. You can make the battles as awesome as you want, but if the story is awkward or gives to much away, then this turns off whoever is playing. As a creator and writer try to work on the story a little bit more. Other than that, I guess it was fine.
