Nawasa Juice: A Rocker's Love Story Review
A rockin' awful game: A Review of Nawasa Juice
Review by eien_tsubasa
Okay....I don't know how to start this. This game is just...strange. Not good or bad. Just...strange. So, I'm just gonna start the review.
The apparent setting of this story is August 22, 2010. The story begins with the main character, "Rock Rolls" (ugh...)having this rather awkward dream about getting devoured by a man-eating book (yeah, really. Don't ask.) He then wakes up in school where his teacher Mr. Salazar wants to speak to him after class. After a very brief and rather bland verbal exchange, Mr. Salazar gives Rock a book called "Nawasa Juice". Without any explaination as to why, Rock decides to go home and read it. The book however sends him into a magical world filled with monsters, swords, and a bunch of other RPG stereotypes. Its later discovered that the book teleports him to different stories within the book itself. This is, in all honesty, where I stopped.
Before I get the usual rage messages, I didn't stop because it was bad. I stopped because it was weird. And not just weird, it was speratic and just downright awkward, with a lot of unexplained things. For instance, the grammar used in Nawasa Juice is arranged very awkwardly. Some sentences make sense, while others are just extremely jumbled to the point of illiteracy. There's also Filipino thrown in, which I thought was some type of mysterious language until I found out that the story took place in the Philipines ( think I spelt it wrong, sorry.)
There are also a few unexplained things in Nawasa Juice. For example, the game never addressed that the story was in the Philipines until much later in the game. Why didn't the creator find some clever way to tell you? And why does a futuristic school have wooden sliding doors? Why is the year 2010 futuristic at all? And what about when Rock beat the skeleton monster in the beginning of the game, why did he wake up in front of the book? Did he just sleep standing up the entire time? And what about that mysterious voice? Is is some outside force? His sub-conscience? And if its his sub-conscience, how is he having conversations with it? There's just too many questions and barely enough answers, which makes the game that much confusing.
There were some cool things within Nawasa Juice despite all the weirdness though. There was....well...nothing really. All the things that were added in the game were pretty unnecessary for the most part. Like the Kingdom Hearts HP/MP gauge. Even though there's and HP/MP gauge in the menu, there's this gigantic one on the field that serves no purpose. I don't mind going into the menu and doing a little reading. But that gauge is just gigantic and takes up the entire top-left of the screen. Kingdom Hearts was a very active game where the menu was seldom used, but Nawasa Juice is passive, and doesn't need it. I think the game would be a lot better without it, personally, but that's all up the the creator. The encounter gauge was a nice touch, though, and I give kudos to the creator. Good job.
My other problem lies with the monster battles. Monster have unbalanced amounts of HP (300-500 HP)and Rock does 20-40 damage per turn, so battles get really boring really fast. And of course, this game has side-view battle system and limit breaks, a turn off to me, but oh well, I digress.
Okay, rating time!
-Strange Story
-Plot holes
-Slow moving battle systems
-slightly impressive add-ons
-Weird....almost everything
5.5
This game, despite its problems, was kind of enjoyable. If you take out all the little unneeded touches like the KH HP/MP gauge and the side-view battle system, you still get that classic RPG feel. The other reason the game got this score was because it wasn't a bad game, but not a good one either just weird and speratic. The whole "book taking you to another world" opens up some unique possibilites. All the creator has to do is explore them. NOTE TO CREATOR: Just work on the story and take out some random things and the game will be fine. I liked the encounter gauge and the way it was used.
