Now what should I name this...?: A Review on Tenshi Kyouran
Review by eien_tsubasa
*sigh* You know, all these reviews take a lot out of a guy. It feels so repetitive like, "your game has no character development" or "whats up with this tile set". The same thing every time, again and again. But, that's not entirely my fault. The blame goes to the developers, who make the same mistakes time and time again without learning from each others faults. They put their games out without checking the database or reworking the story at all. A common mistake that is spreading like a plague. *whew* Okay enough ranting, I'm just gonna give you this review of "Tenshi Kyouran: Angel Fury"
Okay, so the story begins with Gekidou, a random Paladin (although you can change his job class) who wakes up randomly in a mysterious room that plays music from Persona 4. God (I guess) wants you to stop the forces of darkness so that the forces of light can't lose (NOW WHERE HAVE I SEEN A STORY LIKE THIS BEFORE...). Your then teleported to a random town to see a king, who's simply much too cool to help you out. So you find this random magician and you leave the village to do random things.
...
You know what?
I just typed random five times!
O:
And with this leads to the game's first problem: EVERYTHING HAPPENS RANDOMLY. And almost rediculously so. The character is introduced with absolutely no character development. God randomly chooses the main character of all people to end a war between good and evil that can make or break the world's fate. He's teleported to a random town he kows nothing about and finds a flamboyant magician so joins him in a heartbeat. Everything happens so speratically and so fast that you don't know whats going on. Its like the developer was given ten seconds to make a cheezy j-rpg with nothing but his unoriginal imagination. But despite this, I kept playing, much to my discontent.
The other problem is that it seems the story does everything for you. God teleports you to the first town, the king gives you 5000 bucks, a braindead easy mission gives you another 15000, and some random guy on the field map teleports you to the airship. It's like asking and elderly person with a motor scooter if she needs help crossing the street: don't give them the option if they can already do it themselves.
Then there's the story. It like the developer wanted to force feed the story to avoid any real effort in explaining anything. I think exactly 3 minutes went by when God tells you that one paragraph essay called a back story and beams you to the castle. No presentation, no explaination, thus no reason to give the story any type of merit. The story is vital to any rpg, as well as the way its presented. If the story sucks, then the game, in turn, sucks. Please keep this in mind.
This is also the first game to mess up tilesets. I went upstairs from the inn in the first town, seemed innocent enough. But then as soon as I got to the roof, my character was stuck, and he couldn't get back down to the second floor. Another similar problem is at the Cave of Trials. You go through the door, enter the room, and you can't get out.
...are you kidding me...?
After updating the demo three times, the developer couldn't even take the time to check the tiles on his maps. That is a mediocre mistake that can't go overlooked. I mean, that practically RPG Maker 101 here!
Despite the negatives, there were some positives. Like the Job Class system....and that's it really. Nothing else stood out. An even if there were any good points I missed, then that's only because there were so many mistakes that outweighed them.
Okay, rating time!
-unoriginal story plot
-unchecked maps
-no character development
-rushed story
2.5!
I'm not sure, and I'm only shooting stuff out, but my guess is that the creator was so stoked about making a good game that her forgot HOW to make a good game. NOTE TO THE DEVELOPER: Please check you tilesets, raher CHECK EVERYTHING before you submit you game. Other than that, don't quit your day job.
