Running out of Review Titles: A Review of Thief and Blizzard Planet

Review by eien_tsubasa

The search for a breakthrough game since Vigour of the fellowship continues... To be honest, I really dislike giving out all these terrible ratings, but fact is fact and i'm really not one to bs or beat around the bush. Both games got a three and here comes why:

Good points:

Decent use of the rtp characters, in fact its the only game with enough gall to use the regular battle system instead of joining the crowd of others who choose the sideview battle system. Both games are truely rebels without a cause (i'm not going to use the term Maverick for obvious reasons).

The second being the games storyline. Personally if the game went well enough for a second game to happen then something must've went right (and I stress, without the sideview battle system)

Bad Points:

Ridiculously fast level up:

In Blizzard Planet, your party will level up twice after their first battle and one level per battle after that, up until you defeat the first boss in which, you will only be halfway close to leveling up. This is the same in Thief except that you will end up levelling once per battle till you reach imps and die miserably the first go around.

Skill Overabundance:

In Blizzard Planet, of course understanding that this is the sequel to Thief, you seem to learn every skill at your disposal to kill any boss with a weakness to whatever you have. Giant snake boss? Ultimate Dark Move from Hades not working? No problem, kill it with fire!

Character/ Monster Imbalances:

Probably the biggest problem in both games. There's always a point where the beginning starts you out fighting against pathetically weak enemies that do single-digit damage to your triple-digit HP values. Once you're lulled into a false sense of security and confidence, you get ambushed by enemies with HP well into the late 600s and early 800s who suddenly do hundreds of damage to your frightened and confused party. And when your finally able to cope with it (Blizzard Planet), you find yourself cold and alone on the Blizzard Planet only to get horribly maimed by an enemy party of a werewolf and two will-o-wisps.

The point I want to make here is to go into the database and balance out these monsters. Need help? check the tutorials and look for "Bricks and Doilies: A tutorial on Monster Making"

Characters that you can feel detatched to:

It's actually one of the things that really need the most attention. The story's fine but I can never feel anything toward or even coming from the entire character cast. Each character's dialogue is exactly the same with no hint of a personality whatsoever except in Ulrika who just happens to remind me of Zell Dincht fo FF8, she was angry and had a rival who you end up killing early in the game. There's also no sign of character growth except probably between Ulrika and her connection to Thief who possessed her brother, but that's about it. Once again, since it's something that really needs attention, there are tutorials for that and yes, I have one too.

Both games have potential to be better but were ruined by these glaringly obvious faults. I'm not sure if your planning to either update both or go on with another game or even do neither, but if you do decide to make another game, be sure to look over everything to avoid overlooking huge problems. Oh yeah, and don't go changing your battle system on me! :D
