Hero's Realm Review
Hero' Realm
Review by mgholson
Hero's Realm was one of the first games I ran across when looking for a 2K3 game to play and learn from. I enjoyed playing Final Fantasy and Dragon Warrior on my NES back in the day so I figured since this was advertised as old school RPG it would be right up my alley. My first thought though, I'm not to sold on the name, its a bit generic, but lets try it anyway.
THE GOOD:
I'm blown away by the time and effort that went into this title its amazing. The character selection is brilliant and the number of characters you can play with is astounding. I can't imagine you get all this in a fan made game. Maps are fine though nothing will scream out at you as unique or awesome, just solidly playable. There are several creative little things thrown in, like ice that you slide on, that was very cool.
The monsters all are great, the character sprites are awesome and I love the old style battle characters. Lots of equipment to try out and I never really got stuck in the game, though I'm not that far yet. There is just so much in this game I can't believe someone made it.
THE BAD:
Story isn't this games strong point, granted I haven't gotten that far in the game yet, but so far this plays alot like NES RPGs. There is little text and background and no real character development and interaction. The thing is this isn't really the kind of game that needs cut scenes and long drawn out conversations so thats not all bad.
I like traditional RPGs, I like random battles, I don't even mind training my characters up by griding some random battles, what I don't like is losing characters over and over again. I got really annoyed that my mage seemed to get pummeled with attacks and killed more then any other character. He was a level behind everyone else because he kept dying. It just seemed like he couldn't hold his own in the party, of course I could have traded him in one a new level 1 PC, but that wouldn't have probably been to great. Also in some places I think the random battles were just too frequent and got to be a drag.
Overall I'd highly recomend it, especially if your not into dramatic story type games that play more like a movie then a game. You will have to be able to handle lots of random battles though they are worth it.
