Worth the Hype

Review by Fighter

I have not played this game in like five years, so my memory might be a little fuzzy. Rest assured, what I do remember about this game is really positive. I'll keep it short and sweet.

Pros:

- The narration and story telling. Lys manages to turn the overdone fugitive story into something amazing; it's so well written you want to play just to find out what will happen. Seldom does a game, be it professional or amateur, offer such a well told story.
- Gameplay. Lys adds tons of bells and whistles that help to enhance the relatively limited RM2K engine. For instance, there is a Final Fantasy 8 style 'drawing' system that lets you learn skills off of enemies. There is a brief Zelda-style diversion. There is a well done, but not obtrusive, custom menu system. Lysander achieves some coding feats that were, and still are, pretty impressive -- the only difference is he never goes overboard. In addition, some battles are well designed, teetering on the edge of frustration. For the most part, though, the balance is right on.

Cons:

- Graphics. Although Lys's strong gameplay and story telling carry the game, the graphics are noticeably mediocre. Of course, I'd take the incredible inconsistency and sometimes ugliness over the overboard bombastic mapping style that some RPG Maker games suffer from. They aren't that bad, though...
- Battle System. It's an inherent flaw in RM2K, but some battles just aren't that fun. I remember some fights being really challenging, which can be frustrating at times.

Bottom Line: It's a genuine RPG Maker classic. I think it lives up to the hype in the story department, but it's not without its flaws. Those flaws are well documented, though. Regardless, I think it's a good game if you can look past some mediocre graphics and you can tolerate RM2K's battle system.
