Black Shadow
Here's is my fist VX mapping tutorial. This time, will show you how you can make a simple village, with the blocky RTP tileset.

First, let's make a map that's 30X30

First hint comes here. I've seen some village maps that has a fence surrounding the whole village. That's extremly ugly. Sure, you can have fences, but my suggestion is to just have it in the entry of the village.

You see these tileset pieces?

These are hte one you should use. The grass parts for a forest village, and the desert ones for a desert village, and ect.

We are going to make a grass village.

Paste grass on the whole map.

Then, decided where to put the entrance. I will put it in the upper left corner. Also, put trees outside the fence, so it looks more natural.

Here's how far we have come now.

See these parts?

Using that part make it looks more realistic. Trees close eacheter is more natural and realistic.

Now, the small entrance is done. Let's see how we can make a house.

Here's an exampel

Houses in VX is tricky. Trying to make the non-symetrical will only end up in faluire. The houses is just meant to be square, sad enought.

Take a look on what I have done. Be creative. A fence surrounding the house makes it more private. Also, add detailed nature. Remember, nature is random, so don't put trees on a straight line.

Also, take a close look on this.

It may look wierd when you put the door there now, but you won't see it in game. This is very important if you want to make a door event, such as the quick door event. When you enter the door without something like this, you will walk straight into the wall. So remember that.

Well, we are far from done yet. Let's mae a town square, should we?

Remember, a town square can be symmetrical, since it's created by humans, but the nature must still be random surrounding the square.

You can also have a small river crossing the village. Don't make it to straight, It will look ugly, and non-realistic.

Also, use your imagination. Use your creative. With those skills, you can create amazing maps, even with VX:P

Hope you learned something today.

Cool...

Thanks guys...

I need some more comments, so I know if I need to change anything, or explain anything better.

Kewlness pwnage mate,
Although you cant teach us how to be creaqtive like you, can you ? >:]
Black Shadow
Alll I can say is that you need imagination to be creative. happy.gif

Thanx man that's really good tutorial .. thank you very much! ..
Koru-chan
Forgot to post this when I first read this tutorial, but love it. Thanks so much, it really helped. I'm one of the ones that used to be guilty of surrounding entire villages in fence like a goob.

Hope you don't mind, but I linked to this tutorial in my mapping tutorial instead of just going over villages in my tutorial. Figured your tutorial was already good for it, I didn't need to essentially repeat it in mine.
PMussulo
looks pretty ace!

I don't lack creativity, but making towns alway come out all wrong for me...
Rory
Something very wrong with the RTP windows is that they are too large and stick out of the side of the buildings.. Your town looks very nice, and the tutorial explains alot, very well. Good job.

No worries about that happy.gif

I need suggestions of what kind of tutorials you guys want me to do next.

Well, village and towns is almost silmilar in layout, so I think a town tutorial isn't necessary at the moment.

However, I may begin on a world map tutorial as soon as I can.
ninja_person
That would be good! Also, awesome tutorial! Now my villages will be much better!
Jameon
Hey i got a question.

Where did you get the tileset for the house and the fence?
YanXie
It is already in the default tileset, just look over the tabs A-E and you can see it

cheers,puppeto4. smile.gif

Looks pretty decent. Although, there are many differences between villages and towns, least of not size wise. Larger towns will be laid out differently than a little village.

could you make a tutorial on how to map out a palace with panoramic view as to if a cutscene? ohmy.gif and make a add-on tutorial for it on how to script the charector stepping outside to talk to a general the night before a battle but the flames burst everywhere and the castle gets attacked by dragons and a guy named fuddle comes to save you and in the end he betrays you and hands you over to the dragon king after the whole mess is over?!?!?!?!?

I hope your joking...

This was a good tutorial. I didn't like that one part where the tables where... that was iffy. But I loved how you setup the map from the top left corner and how the house looked. It just flowed like it should. Great use of the tileset. Great tutorial!

My suggestion for a following tutorial, would either be the world map. Or a forest tutorial. That would be cool.
Well keep up the great work!

Presidential Voice: We need tutorials and not just simple tutorials but one's that we canfall back on and go "Oh... that goes like that.". We the RPGers need a tutorial of..... Making a metropolis! ohmy.gif

Um...this sounds absurd, but I can't for the life find that door graphic in the default tileset...

It's not part of the tileset. If you go into event modes and right click you'll see 'quick event creation' go to that menu and you'll see door, which will let you choose a door graphic and choose where the door leads.

Anyways... what's the chance of a castle town tutorial? I'm having a hard time making one of those.
OrigamiRose
The chance is pretty low. I don't own VX anymore.

>.> That happened to me, too. But I found that if you go to the "Events" 'view' of the map and use the Quick Event --> Door, you can pick a couple of different ones...
Great tutorial, by the way happy.gif now I can make my villages/whatever look better!

Konnichiwa!

uuh.. never thougth i would use that: try the search

aside of that, you can import tilesets and replace the existing 5 TileA-E (A is made up of more then one part for different kinds of autotiles while E is empty for your use)
there is somewhere a script for additional graphics. but have not seen a working version till now

Mr. Pyder
Sweet tutorial.

Very nice tutorial, it helps new users practice village building. It got me to build better yards around houses in my game and it was useful.
Azuaya
great tutorial of helping non-creative user to create a small village xD. even though i'm just a beginner, this will surely come in handy
perlin
Thanks for the tutorial, I often doubt that a village will look good to me, but that tutorial showed me I can make some improvements that will look cool too, thanks man!
chibbydude121

Nice tutorial indeed! I'm pretty bad at mapping and this tutorial helped. But, like someone else said it, a tutorial for bigger cities would be great. You know, more urban areas would have some different mapping than small towns (a more artificial environment I mean), and new problems, like how to make a really big city without ending with a boring or unrealistic map?
