the man

A little history of this game.

Under was my first project. It was created the RTP Challenge contest at rmxp.org. The goal was to make a game using only the RTP and within a certain timeframe. I figured what better way to learn and try to master gamemaking then to actually try and make one. I never expected the response I got on this game, as to me it was very amateur. But it was well recieved and so I updated some of the graphics and such after the contest.

A little more useless facts.

Originally Under ended about 2 hours into the game. It had a very basic story, because it was for a contest. The original ending happened when the first group of characters "Hex, Digit, etc etc" made it out. After the contest I began to flesh it out. This is where the altering time theme came in. That is why the story drastically changes after about 1.5 - 2 hours. Four more "Chapters" were added and then combined into one game. Under the way it is now.

And finally, if you are STILL reading.

Under, the way it ended up was originally one small part of my new project Black. But since I decided to make a full game out of it I took it out of Black. But in the original story (Yes, I have written the entire story for the series) Under and Black were one game.

Here is the download link.

Awsome game. Why am I posting this? Simple, I really like the add-on information you put on the bottom. For any fans of the game I found the extra stuff interesting. What you are saying is Under and Black are really the same game. So this really is not a prequel. You simply cut parts out of Black and made Under. Maybe you should add a useless facts topic.

I really loved this game. And thanks The Man for the little extra stuff on the bottom of the post. I never would have thought that this game was made in sections.
I actually started playing again to see what I missed the first time around. It really is hard to think that this was your first game.

Kool game dude! I really liked it and want to get into the next one so bad. I have played a few amateur role playing games recently and this is by far the best. Good work, you really are the man.

I just glanced at the downloads for this game and there a alot since it was posted up. But nobody has commented. Is that good? Or maybe its because of the walk through so nobody needs help.
cseye
i noticed that to. Wonder why and why nobody is posting.

I like this game. (Trying to promote Under to other RRR members secretly by replying to the thread)

I guess why I really enjoy this game is because of its uniquely made puzzles which I believe everybody enjoys.

I'll try fix up the main site then, to direct more people to post here.

I don't think you need to do that SYA. The link on there to the forum is pretty big. For Under, the topic won't be massive because of the walkthrough. For now, I think it's all good. smile.gif
Encore
Hmm I can't even download it.

Sorry, must have been deleted for some reason. I am uploading it again, and it should be done within an hour! Please check back later!

I am sorry for the inconvenience.

Hey guys. I downloaded this game some time ago and finally finished it. I love this game. The fact that it is complete is good in itself. The fact it's a fantastic game is even better. Love the game, thanks for making it. Love the characters as well smile.gif smile.gif smile.gif

It's really amazing how long this game has been, going on 4 years now. Just finished playing it through tonight, and I have to admit, it was far better than what I had expected.

Initially, I wasn't so sure, being that I'm not a particular fan of dungeon crawlers, but this game was superb, a very good ratio between game play and story, which by the way was probably the strangest story I've seen in quite awhile.

In a way, it sort of reminded me of Castle Oblivion for the VX, but more coherent. The puzzles were down-right challenging, but perfectly orchestrated, and the alternate timeline theme seemed to fit well. I'll admit, when you pulled that card on me, I had my doubts as to where the story would go, but in the end playing this was a definite treat, and an excellent use of the RTP.

What did ever come out of The Black Effect? Is still something in the works?

Has anyone recently played this?
Everything looks good but it's so old. Is it still considered a quality title when you compare to newer standards? And what would the difficulty level be considered? If it's frustratingly hard and makes no sense I don't want to bother with it and move on to another title.

I've left this thread open because it's still active download, however comments should be in regards to feedback. Questions about games you should play, or the quality of games, should be posted as a new topic in The Tavern.

That said, yes, I do view this as a quality game, and everything about the RTP was used correctly. It's a puzzle game though, and the battle system is a fierce ATB, so if you struggle in solving puzzles or prefer something more casual, you'll probably not like the game play mechanics here so much. The story is well thought out, though, and I recommend giving it a try.

This was a really good game. Probably the best I've played so far for homebrew games. I'd even say it's better than a lot of commercial games for the Nintendo. I'm not comparing to Final Fantasy or Chrono Trigger or anything. No comparison there. smile.gif
The alternate dimension thing really threw a curve though.
The Pluses?
* Awesome Story. Except the ending. Didn't really like that so much.
* I loved the battle system. On first glance it's pretty standard. Then you play it and BAM! It's so quick. It's like button mashing but it's fun!
* I loved the level design. Almost everything made sense including the puzzles.
The Negatives.
* Some spelling but that's OK.
* The ending. But that's just my opinion.
* Although not really a negative, but I wonder what this game would have been like with custom graphics.

What happened to the creator the man? Is he still around? I click on his profile but it doesn't show recent topics or anything. Did he *Or does he still* do any games? And if he has what order was this one? Was it his first game or his last?

It was his first game and was an entry for an RTP only competition on another forum -which he won.

He later made LurkingUnderLife, and was wip with "Black"

He went into filming and movies - no longer making games or is active here..

How do I know all this - I was part of the original Beta team and streamline games used to have a forum of their own - before moving here and eventually shutting down.

Oh. What a shame.
And after looking at the date and what you just said that means this game was made between 7 and 10 years ago right? Wow. Now that's an old game. But it was soooooo good. I'll have to look at the other ones by him you mentioned.
