Most of us are familiar with RPG Maker, but are there any good FREE alternatives out there?

Preferably English ones.

I know this is a bit late, by good do you mean point and click? There's Engine001 which is becoming a pretty nice thing, there's also Verge3, sphere, there was IKA but I think that's no longer active, pygame is similar and active.

Good is subjective, you don't have to sepnd a dime for game development unless you want to really work on 3D which then would justify a purchase.
Always compile cross platform.

I suppose by 'good', I mean something that's well documented and preferably with an active community around it.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll check them out.

Probably not like you would see with RM. Most of the ones that have multiple editors tend to be more focused on rpg maker. You could check out rpgmaker.net for a list of various game editors, and then google search by those names to see if anything comes up in terms of communities.
