Full Version: Linux - Will it take over the desktop?

For many years I've dabbled and have used Linux on a daily basis but as of Windows 8 I feel like the desktop is being shoved to a corner and beaten to a pulp. while OS X still feels like a desktop OS and a good one at that and I do use it quite often for objective-c and working on OSX apps but it's not my main OS well not anymore anyway.

What I like is your not prone to one environment or one way of doing things, now I like the terminal but I also like to click around and there's a distro for that.

What do you guys think, and why is Ms pushing off the desktop? Why didn't they cleaning integrate features from Windows Phone to Windows instead of creating essentially 2 different environments?..

A fluke, their sales will soon reflect and Microsoft will scrap the whole idea of next gen being like windows 8. Windows 8 to me seems like some expansion or trail... Not versatile

What they should have done is just simply market "Hey, we did not remove our start menu from the desktop, it's still there... except now it's in Full Screen!"

WIn8 isn't bad, it's not vista but vista was never vista either... people were too darn stubborn to open there wallets for new hardware and the fact.. Ms didn't advertise it's requirements well enough they just though oh.. if I can run xp I can run this to, nope sorry we require a 200$ upgrade.

Spec requirements were never really a big deal until vista, but PCs are more equipt now than then.

I'm kinda stuck between 4 desktops, Mate, cinnamon, xfce, and kde...

It's also nice that the MMO7 works out of the box with xorg-server 1.3.something.
Don't bother installing gfx drivers from the package manager, just cd /wherever sh name.run and follow the instructions, it's pretty easy lol and quicker than windows(ironic...)

Also OpenGL is fast, much faster than DX11.... Even on my windows gaming box I don't bother with directx as I rather just use OpenGL(and all games DO support opengl) but the games developed especially for opengl do generally look better than dx11.

Like any company they do mess up, while I actually do like windows 8 its going away from the desktop. Windows was and still is geared towards users that just want to get on the internet and check email. Personally I find that OS X does this a lot better.. they also have better network protocols well so does linux which is why your internet appears faster than it is on OSX/FreeBSD/Linux than it does on windows.

The way I see it is that Windows is just a gaming platform which I have on a 2TB SSD linked to a 4TB hdd for games.

I have about 16 hard drives linked in my machine thumbsup.gif

For those that want a high quality ssd.

The average user does not need this.

I don't spend money willy nilly, even thogh it takes a month to save 3,500 most of it goes to bills and I generally have $200/mo to really either save or have fun. I'll be much happier once I finish school.

But I've found Funtoo and Ubuntu to be the most stable of the linux distros, even though Funtoo is rolling release packages are always tested before pushed out not like arch linux where they simply just add the packages because they're new but alas it is their KISS philosophy that will be there downfall.

I posted an article regarding Linux gaining more ground in the industry here.It is a nice short read:
