Finally after 3 years in development, the Black Rose is now completed and test played. happy.gif .
This is one project Iv'e been aspiring to make for years (arguably since leaving the 2k3 days) in 2005.
This key project was created to try and match the later Playstation One rpg's such as Star Ocean 2
or Legend of Dragoon which never left my imagination for wanting to make a similar game with equally
stylish graphics and in game flexibility using 8 way movement.
NB: Though the game is finished, it may change in development (for testing purposes).
Therefore the game/game link may change accordingly..

The Black Rose

Abstract: The game is set in a beautiful fantasy world which focusses on the main character called Chao.
Chao is part of the Shimante faith, a minoist born to restore it's crumbling powers after a leak in it's circle allows a
sinister being to emerge within the ranks with dire consequences. Chao, the last minoist, has to group with his friends
and fellow minoists to find and destroy this new ordeal.

Genre: The game is essentially a jrpg type rpg.

Engine: The game has been created using RMXP.

Story
Wajjir the great god, created five shimante minoists. Each one representing the runes Darkness, Wind, Lightning, Fire and Ice.
Each minoist had its own rune guardian, blessed by Wajjir himself. The story starts one day when DInah (Chao's own guardian)
visits him to say that not all is well, that the great Shimante Rose is dying, and that one of the runes has become lost somewhere.
Chao's friend, a fellow minoist called Lianne goes out with her own guardian to try and track down the dark minoist and tries to
seek the revenge for her mother Rethica, who had in the past challenged the wrongful minoist claimant and battled and beat him
and his guardian Shaman. Shaman was once the fire guardian of Chao's father Growan....and the story unfolds.
Wajjir immediately conceals Shaman back to the Guardian Chamber....and Chao's has to reclaim as his own.
Chao has visited his so called ill mother for several years, but then realises that his mother is something much more important
and has been hiding elsewhere as the rose itself. The story reveals !
Chao and his party set off to find this missing link, and faces more than he ever expected to find.
Characters

Chao
A true minoist born with rune of fire. His father, though a loyal servant, had weaknesses that Chao and his guardian has to deal
with as the story reveals more intrigue.
Chao is a Combatant, truly a dedicated minoist who is devoted to find out why the Shimante Rose is dying.
Chao is also an inquisitve person, and is the main key character throughout the game.
Has an abilty to use all level of fire spells.

Lianne
Features mid way during the game. A blessed minoist with the Ice Rune, she shares a link why she should pursue the mystery
rune of darkness.
A long freindship with Chao, Lianne initially wants revenge for her mother who almost died defeating Shaman.
Lianne's class is Mage.

Gulia
A very close friend of Chao and Cyrus. Bubbly and flambuoyant, Gulia likes to be positive, and will always hide her intelligence
by conveying her somewhat passive thoughts to please the party.
Gulia is very close to Chao.....as the story unfolds.
Class....Cleric.

Cyrus
An intelligent lady who always has the right answer. A close friend of Chao and Gulia. Through research, Cyrus has a good
understanding of the minoist faith and what Chao and Lianne's emotions are going through.
Class: Warrior.

Junar
A very confident , yet emotional person, who makes his living from finding gemstones. Meets Lianne, and chases after her in the
Incus mine after discovering she left the village without telling him.
Junar enters the game midway during the game.
Class: Mage.

Croix
Son of Tienkus, Croix initially wants closure with his father who he belives was a true minoist. He tries to seek fairness, in finding
him, but soon recognises that his judgement may not have been the right one.
Class: Imperialist.

Eventing by darkhalo.
Known issues: Event detection not always accurate. Eg Walking map sprites facing hero & collision niggles
with a couple of the larger tilesets. Addressed to some extent with eventing.

Features
As close to 2.5D as you will get in RM !
Both Battles and all maps are in full isometric view !
Walking sprites are in 2.5D too.
No RTP dependency in this at all.
Use a PC analogue controller if you have one. It really works well for gameplay.
Those with Playstation 2 DS adapter....all controls both menu options and on map functions.
Those without....simply use the keyboard direction arrows and Z key for Rush movement.
Ins key brings up the menu.
Spacebar to execute events etc.

Standalone = Yes.
Gameplay is between 4-5 hours +.

It's great to see The Black Rose finally released! happy.gif
I'll have to find time to play it. =D

Maybe I'm blind, but I'm having difficulty trying to find the download link.
MiguHideki
this looks great and fun!!!! biggrin.gif however cant see the download link :3

btw can i ask a question? what ever happened to symphonic rhapsody? somehow i can't download it sad.gif
darkhalo
Thanks for those who have taken an interest so far.
Last night when I was tidying up the thread, and put up the download link, my PC crashed sad.gif .
No warning at all...and just unbelievable. Apparantly error windows 32 config was corrupted and it
wouldn't reboot. So Iv'e had to restore.
Luckily, all my game material (including games) were saved in a partitoned drive, so thats a relief.
Just need to re install rmxp again....
So apologies...do be patient, and I'm hoping the d/l link will be up within 48 hours. sweat.gif .

Can this post be merged with the last ?. (Yes! ~ X-M-O)
Just a heads up to say that I have uploaded the links to download the game wink.gif .
Yes my desktop has died....and my old brick of a laptop has saved the day here.
Good news is..... I'm off to PC World now.

@MiguHideki...I'll look into it once I get Rmxp reinstalled.

Firstly many thanks for your feedback there.....I was expecting this to be okay.
Anyone else experiencing the same problem ?

I'll look into the rgassad issue.
May well be an issue with the missing Audio file...meaning another upload !

Yes...it was originally project X....my desired project of all.
X-M-O
Merged those posts for you. wink.gif

I'm going to try the download to see if I experience similar problems and report that back to you. =]
Philip
Ok, whatever download site you're using I can't find the download and I'm not going to download some download manager to play. Am I missing the download link or something?? I'm in love with the graphics and stuff of the game though.

Direct download.
(If it works that way, lol.)
I didn't need anything extra to download it. =]

Also, darkhalo, I tested out the download and the game extractor locks up when attempting to extract the RGSS encrypted archive file, so it likely needs to be recompiled on your end. =]
Philip
Thank you X-M-O I appreciate that and HOLY SMOKE!!! This thing is large almost as large as VERGO LOL!!
darkhalo
Thanks XMO and all. happy.gif .
Anyways Im going to do what I did with SoS project and leave it so you only place the BGM in the folder.
That should work which I'll do later today.
Ive found in the past when encrypting anything over 150 Mb rmxp can throw a wobbler esp with the
larger music files.

EDIT. There is an issue with the encrypted version which I'm still working out...
Problem with the tileset file only....its not including them all. ?
Meanwhile I need to think about this one.

FURTHER EDIT. Game is now ready to upload !!!....so follow instructions as in post 1.
Note:This was tested in XP, so those with windows 7 will need to use admin mode.
Have only just acquired windows 7 recently....so I'm busy adapting to that.
X-M-O
Everything works fine with this download, but see my PM, darkhalo. =]

The downloads worked now - you have to use the download button "Click here to download with sendspace".
But I can't start the game - I am told, that the system is unable to find the tileset "inside house 12". But it's there... I can see it.
What's the problem ?
X-M-O
There was another issue that is being fixed, it'll be back soon. =]
darkhalo
First of all, thanks for those that have been so patient with this one.
Since the recent crash, its been a case of repair all round with this.....and revising the saved version on a
re installed rmxp has exposed several headaches. Unbelievable mellow.gif .

New links are up (similar brief as before) so fingers crossed....this will all now work wink.gif

I'm enjoying the game.

I would like to suggest a couple things -
I would have liked to have seen a sign on the weapon and item shops.

The enemies hardly ever show up in the forest making leveling up very time consuming.
I had none show up in the first section, so I headed south to the next section and took two steps and entered a battle with two blood mushrooms and some "bear/man " looking thing. They make huge hits on you and you die. The enemy encounter rate should be much higher and the easier to kill ones should be in the upper section and get progressively harder as you move through the forest sections.

After going through the forest and trying to go to the cave to see the elf I get this error:
Unable to find Graphics/Autotiles/001-G_Water01. ... Game shuts down.....

I can't get back into the forest...so now I'm stuck until I get the missing graphic. sad.gif

I Guess I'll just start over and try to get leveled up and make money.

1 Encounter rate has been restored back to normal in the first forest map ( I forgot to change it back when testing). pinch.gif
There's quite a variety of easy enemies just in that map alone that level you up in a short time.

2 Apologies about the auto tiles....the game uses no RTP which is what it says is missing ?. Those with Rmxp its not
so much an issue.
Iv'e included the autotile file (Quick Fix) which you can add to the graphics file.
Thanks for the feedback.

I have the same problem - missing the above mentioned file - I've used your patch -but nothing happens.Same error as before.

Okay, an update. IV'e just spent a good couple of hours going through this to find out what is
going on exactly. happy.gif
Firstly, Iv'e encrpted the game again (in part) added the graphics file and installed the game
onto a different PC with windows 7 as standalone. It worked perfectly first time.
@sammie & wildwind. I managed to get beyond the maps you have indicated without any
missing graphic files/issues.
For the patch, do you have the tilesets, autotiles, fog and panorama files all in the Graphic folder ?
Like I said, the game itself doesn't rely on the RTP...though thinking about it, some of the early graphics
may not have been extracted altogether...such as a stray autotile or pan. (In the patch).
Anyways, Iv'e retested the game (resolved a further bug in the first forest map re enemy
encounter) and that is about it really...all works fine.
I'll upload this recent revised one as version 2 either tonight or tomorrow.
Thanks for the feedback (as always). wink.gif

Iv'e now uploaded the V2 gameload files which I tested out as a standalone and which worked.
Have also edited it too, so that first forest map reveals enemies first time.
The new v2 link is in the first post.

Yet another fantastic game with graphics which, in my opinion, excel Seal of Seasons, also loving the 2D effect.
I think I may have encountered a bug - I have 2 aquamarines in my items but they will not let me in the trading house - any suggestions ?

Glad to recieve some feedback on this, as it was 3 years plus in development. Glad you like it wink.gif .
Re the Aquamarines, lol, not sure where you acquired the second one. But the trade house will probably come into version 2.1.
Instead, I compromised more on the "buy mine plots and gem extraction" theme rather than the trade shop itself. This involves
buying a mineral plot, hiring folk etc as a sub quest really. So here, precious gems can be sold at most shops.
However, a true trade shop will enable you to wheel and deal for extra profits.
Artismiths will enter in a later version too.
mimella
I got the 2nd aquamarine through mining and the chap now says the guild is closed but he will buy gems so I don't think it was a bug because I had forgotten to kill Fragan and got the gem in spider's den. However there seems to be a glitch back in Toyka - I have told to speak to Yan Yan (done) then speak to Guila (done) then return to Inn and speak to L but she just tells to speak to Yan Yan - so nothing happens. Also tried going to various places and there are no fights just walking round unmolested for a change!!
BTW there are a few grammar issues but it does not spoil the enjoyment of the game.

Re above.
EDIT:Two known game bugs were identified in the game. (in Tyoka with Lianne).
The game has been re edited and test played again, and is now good to go. Download version 2a.
My thanks to mimella for spotting the bugs.

I'm gonna try to make a self-extracting compressed .exe for the the game using Install Creator, and pass it whole to you instead of two files.

Okay, I'm compressing it slightly by using a largely lossless program to reduce the color. I'll check it before I pack it, though, to make sure it doesn't go shabby as a result.

Yay, I did it, no noticeable loss of quality. Okay, PM me when you've downloaded this and built a mirror site (I don't wanna hold such a file forever).

In all honesty, many of these graphics were sourced from another site for members to use, including mapping material.
Mostly converted for rmxp use really.
Resources (original sources) included Iv'e put in the credits in first post. (from what I know).
Certain others, such as the cave mazes etc are pretty much all Paint Shop done.

@bulmabriefs....many thanks. I'll put up a link for that. Works perfectly. Added to my "to do" list.

Ok, I'm so sorry but I'm going to do some bashing for a quick sec.

It's so dispiriting to try to download a game from RRR and be redirected on the download website to 14 different advertisments before you get to the actual game. From your last post I think you're working on getting one file together for download but may I suggest mediafire???? It's one of the absolute best download sites and you know EXACTLY where the download button is. I hate 6 different download buttons and they're all for a media player or a download manager or a porn site (lols).

Just making a suggestion there cz I never did get your game to download because it wanted to install a download manager and I'm like ugh!

So anyways I really hope you're able to find something that works well.

Okay Philip, message understood. I tried mediafile originally a while back and it seemed to take ages waiting to download a file, so
I stuck to the alternative which actually worked without a problem. Drawback are the ads, though bypassable as mentioned in the
first post..
Like I said, I will be uploading the game exe (by bulmabriefs) which installs nicely as one game file.
It will certainly be the weekend before I get a chance to do anything with RM, but I WILL retry Mediafile for the above
upload. wink.gif :

I know this is something that you don't want to hear BUT if you actually pay for a mediaFire account then it will upload and download much quicker and you also get custom download URLs for your projects.

I usually make 2 GB games (custom music and lots of images lol) and it takes 2 to 3 hours on upload but only about 45 min to download.

Ok, I finally was able to download the game and graphics and have been playing the game. Very nice game so far wink.gif

Am I the only one finding this game INCREDIBLY hard to follow? Not even five minutes into the game and I not only have no idea what I'm doing, but no grounding reason to care, and I for some reason was teleported into the middle of a town? Who are these people? What am I doing? Hello??

the story

What story? I'm given, as an introduction, some monologuing without any hard meaning to it, a knock at the door, a floating leaf spirit or something who our protagonist doesn't bat an eye at or react to realistically who was supposedly something in a dream she had (Which would have made a much better introduction unless my game's broken!), saying something but not clarifying that there was someone the protagonist once liked or loved, then poofing away to neverneverland and leaving me, the player, with nothing to do.

If that's REALLY the intro, and my game ISN'T missing a scene before this point, then you've officially made an RPG I cannot possibly review.

Hmm. The intro was quite simple in terms of story objective. It typically unravels like most rpg's.
Re review.....yes, fair enough we all have our own opinions....per se.
This may not be SquareEnix, but it holds it's own as a single home brewed RM development project.

If that were true, you'd at least tell me where to go, in context of the game itself, to start off my journey. I replayed the intro to see what I missed, and I really didn't miss anything. Apparently some rose turning black will mind-screw the protagonist girl, but... why? What rose? Why does she know this? Jeez, it's sure be nice if I could SEE what this DREAM they keep TALKING about WAS so I KNEW what they were talking ABOUT!

See this is the thing: SHOW, don't TELL. This is not a good way to start an RPG, because you've effectively told me all about some dream your protagonist had by referencing the key facts as if I were there to see it, when I clearly wasn't. It would be like if I told you about this HILARIOUS time I had going to the grocery store to buy some milk, and long story short I sold my soul to the Devil. So what?

I expect you to at least introduce a concept in a way I can immediately understand, and can follow along with. It's true it will "unfold as it goes along", but in order for it to "go along", I need things to actually do, that I am told to do, and then shit hits the fan along the way.

If we want to use the example you gave of Square (Square Enix hasn't made a good RPG in YEARS), Chrono Trigger started off telling you outright to go to a fair, a fair that was there celebrating the turn of the new millennium, which is a pretty big deal, and an understandable big deal. You go there and goof around a bit, because that's what you DO at a fair, you run into some girl and travel around with here, and then you find someone who's supposedly your childhood friend who built a damn teleporter, and you decide to sit back and watch. Shit THEN hits the fan, and the plot gets going when HOLY SHIT GIANT VORTEX IN SPACE/TIME, BATMAN! You might not hold much attachment to the girl you just met, but you sure as heck aren't going to be an asshole for no reason since, the main character being a lens for you, the player, you yourself wouldn't just ignore the situation, and you follow after her to save her, and the plot kicks off from there.

Because it told you what to do. In the first five minutes, you're given a direction, and then you're given a goal. Things then get interesting as you're chopping up imps from five hundred years in the past, there's a war going on with demon lords, you're in shit with the law in present time for this bullshit, and then through another time-gate into the future you learn that a parasite the size of a city is going to expunge the entire planet one day and nobody can do anything to stop it.

Chrono Trigger sure as hell didn't start its gameplay by telling you "how cool that fair was the other day", and then expect you to know what point in the story you're in. That would be stupid, and nobody would like it.

Played both CT & CC, both good games....but remember, this IS after all original, and should be treated as such.
There is depth in plenty to this, a gentle start perhaps, but not unlike many an rpg out there. That's how it is. thumbsup.gif

Since you're only reading what you want to read, I'll say this.

There is such a thing as a "wrong" way to write a story.
Philip
@ZarroTsu
LOL! Careful there man easy on the offense.

@darkhalo
ZarroTsu is right to an extent. The beginning is VERY vague. Obviously you don't want to give away the story in the first 5 minutes BUT you should give your player a hint as to what to at least do with a bit of a reason at the beginning. I've found that the beginning of a game is probably the most difficult part to get right because pulling your plot together in an understandable way is very hard if the plot is a good one. Anyways this was just a bit of constructive criticism there.

Lufia 3.

But it isn't actually hard. Your game could have a deep, meaningful story shooting out its eye sockets if all you did was single-line conversations, so long as they told you where to actually go, or what to do. Dragon Warrior on the NES had the decency to tell you "The King's daughter was kidnapped by the Dragon Lord. He is evil. Go kill him.", and leave the player to figure out how.

You can just as easily start your game by saying "Kill the final boss", and nothing else. Kind of surprised there isn't a game that deliberately minimalistic yet.
