We need a new sub thread

So heres what I have recently come across. “Half baked features for games” get booted from the Game theory and design section because “they belong in your game thread.” While this is somewhat true, a general idea of this concept is that half baked ideas might not make it into your game and why clutter up your game thread with calculations, community feedback and “scratch pad notes” when we could have a sub forum under game theory and design for “half baked features” that wouldn't pertain (in the essence of the word) to one game andbecause of the wording it could pertain to any game using similar features.

The Game Theory and Design Forum

Currently is used to discuss game theory, this might be character development, story arcs, and other general game theory discussion based ideas that get the creative juices going and form discussions around said subjects from the community.

However the second you say, add in these features, add in this type of story and throw in this idea of a script – you’re closed and asked to go to your game thread – assuming you have one.

This isn’t right. The idea you present to the community in your game thread is a clear, concise and organized idea of a game with a story, characters, clear defined features and maps. Why should we have to clutter up our game threads with, as stated before, with calculations, half baked ideas and community feedback based on these game ideas and/or features?

One might answer: Because it relates to your game and thus belongs in your game thread, half baked or not.

However I can argue that, game threads are for clear concise planned out games and game features. When I read a game I want to read that “this is what you’re getting” and then the associated feedback based on that. not a bunch of scratch pad notes on ideas that might or might not make it in....

The New Forum or ‘Sub’ Forum

This area would be suited for the explanation of calculations, features that build on other features and ideas for features for your game that you are not clear on and would like to get community feedback. An example of this would be the (now closed) Errands thread in Game theory and design section. It outlines a planned feature, it asks for community feedback and is clearly half baked and not ready to state (in my game thread) “This is a new feature you’re getting”

While one could argue that it points directly to my said game, another might argue based on these already set features this could apply to almost any game that is using these features.

Thus, with that said, the new section would be for “half baked features” that a user is looking for community feedback on in relation (but not directly pointing at) their game. It would be an area where you could post more detailed theories that involve calculations, detailed ideas of features and how they might work in order to spark of community based discussions with out polluting your game thread with “scratch pad based ideas”

Game theory and design is more of a “brain storm general concepts” while this new area would be “I have a concept of x and I have it laid out as such – what I am missing is Y, what’s the community think?”

Your feedback and options on this subject are welcome. I am directing this message at the forum staff.

If an idea pertains to your game and is a system you want to implement within it it would be better in the game thread. Here it is in context.

The reason why yours was closed was that it was specific for your game- Titanhex did explain that if it was opened up more to make it general discussion it would stay open.

There is no need for another sub forum- if a game is under construction it is best to have any discussion in the thread.

Like I said, I mentioned this forum to our staff already and am working on it. I appreciate your enthusiasm none-the-less.

What we need really is a "Hard Theory" board that allows for more specific and well-thought out ideas. The GTD board discusses more general, vague ideas such as writing characters and ideas for systems and battles and etc.

I don't want to see cluttered up game threads filled with old ideas, some of which may possibly be scrapped from the game. I'd rather see them discussed in a forum made for that. The game threads are and should be used for the discussion of concrete things in the game including bugs and systems that are fully implemented, as well as writing and progress.

Game Design has a very hard, empirical side to it. That is rarely touched upon in these kinds of forums for some reason. I want people to see that, and understand that there's far more going into games than just vague ideas. Those ideas really need to take life.

Since these are pretty much the same discussion, I will be requesting this thread be closed and direct people to this new board idea so it too can take life:

This essentially is what I meant by my 2 page post that was formatted poorly - (off topic, can we have a button for copying and pasting from word?)

The idea is that while a "half baked" feature may relate to one persons game based upon whats written the content should not go in your game thread because it gets cluttered up with these "scratch pad" ideas and then the spot light is taken off the game (which is why you made the thread to show off the game) and on to these "half baked ideas"

I know Titanhex sumarised it as you feel that is what we need - the staff will discus the idea.

We cannot supply a button to help with formatting for word as this is a problem with the forum software.
